Final Race Win Gives Morris Second Porsche Club Championship Title

A win in the final round of the 2015 Porsche Club Championship with Pirelli season saw reigning title holder Pete Morris again provisionally crowned overall champion in his Strasse-run 996 C2, a dramatic opening lap seeing him take the lead and hold it for the rest of the race. Tim Speed won Class Two in that final race – and that was enough to give the Dorset-racer the class win and second in the championship.Qualifying  Craig Wilkins was the man to beat in qualifying, seven tenths clear of Mark McAleer with championship leader Morris third, Wilkin’s second best lap time still quicker than the rest and secured him pole for the second race of the day. Kevin Harrison was fourth, the 996 C2s dominating as Karin Moudi and Mike Johnson saw the model take the top six slots.“The car was really mint,” said Wilkins. “We tested here yesterday and it really seems to have paid off, we know we have a quick car for qualifying – but the races could be very different.”Dave Botterill put his Croft experience to good use to take Class Two pole – and seventh overall – in his 964 C2, with Hugo Holmes first of the 968s in second and Andy Toon’s Boxter third, Class points leader Jonathan Evans was fourth quickest.Race One Wilkins got away well at the start and held off McAleer into the first corner, Harrison making his trade-mark rapid getaway to take third. Into Tower corner Class Two points leader Evans went wide with an ABS problem and dropped to the rear of the field. Johnson was in fifth behind Morris and had a good look inside the championship leader at Tower, while Holmes headed Class Two ahead of Boterill, Cheetham and Toon. At the front McAleer set about reducing the early lead of Wilkins, and by lap five they were close together, with the battle for third closing up as Morris was right with Harrison with Johnson in close attendance. Exiting the hairpin at the end of lap eight Wilkins and McAleer both jinked round a backmarker, Wilkins missing a gear giving McAleer the momentum he needed to be able to turn into Clervoux ahead and take the lead. Two laps later they were again side-by-side down the pits straight, but McAleer held the advantage and was from then on able to ease out a small gap and take his second win of 2015.“That was hard work,” said McAleer. “There was so much going on in that race, there was fluid down on the track and I went briefly off. It was so close with Craig, his car seemed a little better early in the race but mine was good towards the end but pretty evenly matched overall. It was a great race, I really enjoyed it.”“I selected the wrong gear as Mark made his move,” said Wilkins, “and I couldn’t do anything about him turning in ahead. We were pretty evenly matched around the whole lap.”With Wilkins a secure second, the battle for third saw Morris looking for a way past Harrison without taking any big risks that might hinder his title charge, whilst holding off the attentive Johnson who as right with him the final laps. They crossed the line in that order after some entertaining final laps, Morris keeping his title charge on course with fourth.

“I made a cracking start,” said Harrison. “Pete Morris was there with me for lap after lap so I’m pleased with that, I missed a couple of gears but was able to hold on.”Hugo Holmes led Class Two in the early lap s before Botterill went past – Holmes then retiring with a  brake issue after a clash with a Class One car. As Botterill claimed his second class win of the season, Steve Cheetham battled with Toon for second, just holding off his class rival.Race Two Pole man Wilkins was slow away but title challenger Morris made a dream start and led into the first corner, and as the rest of the field got tangled up in the first sequence of corners, by halfway round the first lap he had a useful lead. McAleer slotted into second ahead of Harrison and Wilkins, while the Boxster S of Evans headed Class Two from Speed. Morris pushed hard in the early laps and extended the gap to five seconds by lap four, but McAleer in turn had eased clear of Harrison and set about reeling in the leader. In another five laps McAleer was within half a second of Morris, but even as the pair diced through the backmarkers Morris never offered a clear opportunity and stayed in front to take his sixth won of the season – and claim the Class One and overall titles.“I was second on the grid but wanted to get an early lead, so pushed hard early on, but that first lap was even better than I expected,” said Morris. “I had a couple of moments with backmarkers but we’ve done enough to take the title – even though Mark made me work very hard in the final laps. I waited so long to take the overall title it’s great to take two consecutively.”“Pete drove very defensively but very fairly,” said McAleer. “If I could have go close to him a it sooner I might have been able to do more, but he knows the overtaking paces as well as I do and he made sure I had no clear opportunity. After the season we have had I am delighted with a first and a second today.”Behind, Harrison was a secure third, while Johnson in fourth had to hold off an aggressive Wilkins until the latter pitted, Chris Dyer bringing his Cayman S home fifth.“I got another good start and was looking to slide into second but I got hit and that slowed us all up,” said Harrison. “After that the car didn’t miss a beat but the front two were gone. It’s been a good end to the season for us, we have a car we can really race now.”After Evans lost ground on lap two Speed headed Class Two but Toon’s Boxster was right with him and looking for a way past the 968. Speed held sway to take the class win and also seal the class title, with Toon second, Holmes taking third ahead of the recovering Evans,“That was a good battle,” said Speed, “very clean and Andy Toon drove a good race, he went past me when I went wide at the Hairpin, then he outbraked himself later on and I was just able to hold him off – I was driving the tyres off my car and it’s great to finish on a high!”Fuel Protect Porsche Club Championship with Pirelli Race 13 (17 Laps): 1 Mark McAleer (996 C2); 2 Craig Wilkins (996 C2) +1.556s; 3 Kevin Harrison (996 C2); 4 Peter Morris (996 C2); 5 Mike Johnson (996 C2); 6 Chris Dyer (Cayman S); 7 David Botterill (964 C2); 8 Steve Cheetham (Boxster S); 9 Andy Toon (Boxster S); 10 Tim Speed (968 CS).
