MSA Formula race winner Matheus Leist recently tested the new-for-2016 BRDC Formula 4 car and described it as “very impressive”, following a number of laps behind the wheel at Bedford Autodrome last month (September).
Leist, who drives for Double R Racing in MSA Formula, took to the 1.85-mile West Circuit in Bedfordshire in dry conditions and completed a short run in the Tatuus-Cosworth MSV F4-016. The new car offers 230bhp and features a highly advanced aerodynamic package, with a composite rear diffuser and twin-element rear wing increasing aerodynamic performance over the current BRDC F4 by over 80 per cent. Its performance will be superior to the current FIA F4 and MSA Formula machines, making BRDC F4 a logical feeder category to FIA European Formula 3 and the GP3 Series.
Leist commented: “I liked it very much! It is impressive how quick it is on the straight and it has so much grip. It was really good and I enjoyed it a great deal. I think the new engine is very strong and works great with the aerodynamic package. It is the same chassis used in Italian and German FIA F4 but, with the upgrades and the engine, it is a great combination.”
The Brazilian currently lies fifth in the MSA Formula standings heading into this weekend’s (10-11 October) final three races at Brands Hatch, having taken two victories in 2015, winning at Donington Park and Silverstone respectively.
Leist continued: “I think BRDC F4 is a great step. The budget is very cost effective and it prepares you well because the car is much faster than FIA F4 cars, but is slightly slower than Formula 3. It is a nice step for me and other racers who want to reach a top category like Formula One. I think it is a really good step from FIA F4.”
