Trident Sochi Race 1 review

Raffaele Marciello and the Trident team captured a points finish in Race 1 of the GP2 Series weekend at Sochi and will be starting tomorrow’s Sprint Race from the second row on the grid. Cecotto, who was penalized by a reduction in the race distance following to a red flag, brought home a 13th place which clearly does not reflect the potential showed on-track.RAFFAELE MARCIELLO

Marciello, who was starting from row four with Soft tires, got away well. After a few laps, the safety-car came in and then a red flag condition was thrown in order to repair the barriers damaged during an eventful opening lap. The interruption continued for more than 30 minutes, forcing the stewards to trim the distance down to 15 laps. The Ferrari Driver Academy man, who is also part of the ACI Team Italia, felt he had everything he needed to keep passing his rivals. At that point though, he started experiencing DRS issues and was unable to get the needed advantage in passing. On lap 10, he decided to make his pit-stop and went back on-track in a points-paying position, the same in which he crossed the line at the end of the day, also grabbing a row 2 start for tomorrow.Final Position: P6Position on Starting Grid: P7

JOHNNY CECOTTO

At the start of the race, Johnny was blocked by one of the cars he had in front, and that forced him to settle for 10th after the opening laps. Once the race was interrupted, he came back to the pits like all the other drivers and patiently waited for the action to re-start. His car had Medium compound tires which were an advantage over the full race duration. Unfortunately, the distance was then reduced to 15 laps just one minute before the cars got going again, without enough time to change the tires. So Johnny ended up with a 13th place as the final outcome of a day conditioned by external circumstances. He will start tomorrow’s Sprint Race from the 13th place.
