Clarke joins Classic Challenge

Former BTRDA front-runner Stuart Clarke is the latest convert to the HRCR Classic Stage Rally Challenge with his familiar Ford Escort Mk2. The South Wales driver, who has been rallying Mk2 Escorts for 15 years, will make his Classic debut on the Robin Hood Forest Stages this weekend (12/13 March), partnered by seasoned co-driver Cliff Simmons.Having rallied his current Mk2 with a normally aspirated Cosworth engine on BTRDA and Welsh forest events in recent seasons, his brother Steve has now prepared the car to Classic regulations and fitted a BDG engine."We've changed the engine and the brakes, but it was built as a full Group 4 car in the first place and then stored for 12 years. We did the Red Kite as a shakedown in it and it was a bit strange getting used to the BDG engine again. I last ran a BDG years' ago!""Everyone in the Classics has been very friendly and I can’t wait to get out on the Robin Hood," says Clarke, who has little experience of the Nottinghamshire forests. " I'm looking forward to the night stages!"Based in Usk in South Wales, Clarke will be on local ground for the third round of the championship over Epynt on 30 April/1 May. However, preferring gravel events, he has never yet done a rally on Epynt!
