Lieb and Westbrook head Carrera Cup test
Marc Lieb and Richard Westbrook set the pace in the opening Carrera Cup GB test session of the season at Snetterton yesterday (Tuesday 15 March). While Lieb was on hand to shakedown the Porsche Cars GB/Team Autosport entry, Westbrook set the pace amongst the 2005 championship contenders. Both German Porsche ace Lieb and Westbrook (Red Line Racing) set stunning times, lapping the Norfolk track faster than any Carrera Cup car had done before. Ultimately, only 0.175s separated Lieb from Westbrook as Tim Harvey (Team RPM) claimed third slot on the time sheets after a full day of testing in cool but dry conditions."The car was prepared perfectly, so we didn't have to change much," said Lieb. "I've never been here before but the times are okay and the car is getting quicker and quicker." Lieb's best lap was 1m08.857s, seven-tenths of a second under the previous best Carrera Cup lap of Snetterton.Westbrook was also running at a blistering pace, ending the day with a best of 1m09.032s. "I'm pleased with that, but what's really important is that we've consistently run at a very good pace on older tyres," said Westbrook.Third fastest was Westbrook's' 2004 title rival, Harvey, who was shaking down his new car for the first time. "That's the first proper test we've had with the car," he said after posting a best of 1m09.837s. Harvey also drove the car of his team mate Steve Clark and lapped in 1m10.145s.Fourth fastest was Nigel Rice for Red Line Racing, while Damien Faulkner was fifth quickest in a car from Motorbase Performance. Although he will race for Team SAS once the season begins, the Irish racer was putting some shakedown mileage on the Motorbase car.Two impressive Carrera Cup newcomers were sixth and seventh fastest. French-based American Emmanuel Crouvisier (Team RPM) had an excellent day and worked down to 1m10.516s, which was a fraction faster than Stephen Shanly (Red Line Racing). Both drivers are new to driving Porsches, so their pace is expected to improve still further in the build up to the opening races of the season. The next official Carrera Cup test is at Thruxton on Friday 1 April.
