Spedeworth International brought the thrilling National Hot Rods to Wimbledon Stadium for Rd 9 of their World Final Qualifier on Sunday May 13th. The drivers were keen to secure those vital points and delivered a fantastic night's racing, which was filmed for future broadcast by Sky TV.
Heat 1 set the scene for the exciting, bumper-to-bumper racing that was to follow with a real pedal to the metal race, which saw the red flags out for a race stoppage due to a car stuck on the safety fence. On the restart, with the pack now firmly bunched together, #25 Keith Woods resumed his strong lead to finish first ahead of #639, Ricky Hunn and #198, Andy Steward.
Heat 2 was an equally spirited affair with an epic duel for the flag and those vital World Qualifier points developing between Scotland's star driver #844 Billy Bonnar and #291, Mike Thurley. The canny Scot held onto his lead by about a quarter of a car's length to take the chequer ahead of 291 and #25, Woods.
After two races and a nostalgic display of Hot Rod racing skill from veteran and former multi World Champion #351 Barry Lee, who was also commentating on the event for Sky TV, the Rods rolled out for their final.
Once again the drivers pressed the gas pedal firmly to the floor and gave a display of racing skill around Plough Lane that had the crowd on their feet. #844 Bonnar was looking good but could not catch the front running #14 Phil Spinks. As the race progressed Spinks drove a textbook drive, weaving through the back markers to take the flag and the points ahead of the hard-charging Scot, Bonnar and #75, Nigel Steward.
There will be racing action of a different kind on Sunday 20th March when the Rookie Bangers tear each other apart in their London Championship at Wimbledon Stadium, Britain's finest stock car racing circuit
