The Rockingham motor racing facility has added another top Tourism award to its trophy cabinet after taking the top spot in the Best Regional Event category at last nights Leicester Mercury ‘The Week’ awards.
Last November the venue near Corby in Northamptonshire, won the 2005 Enjoy England Tourism Gold Award for both the exciting racing and quality of facilities at the 52,000 seat motor racing venue.
This reputation was further enhanced last night (22nd March 2005) at De Montfort Hall when Leicestershire’s leading publication recognised the excitement and success of Rockingham’s “Thunder Sunday” events which combine American-style stock car racing on Europe’s fastest motor racing circuit with live music events on the first Sunday of each month in the summer. Rockingham beat prestigious competition including such traditional events as Nottingham's 710 year-old Goose Fair and the National Heritage Centre at Stoneleigh.
“This is great news and a huge honour, to win two of the region’s top awards" said Rockingham spokesman Jeff Carter. "It is great recognition of our commitment to deliver top-class entertainment to match our fantastic venue. Leicestershire is an important market for Rockingham and we are pleased that our events are so well received by the people there.”
Rockingham found itself in good company as Hollywood stars Mel Gibson and Charles Dance won the awards for Best International Film – Passion of the Christ and Best Film – Ladies in Lavender.
