Wyn Humphreys, Humberside review

HUMPHREYS HAPPY IN HUMBERSIDE

Wyn Humphreys claimed his second maximum score in the under 25 category of the Silverstone Competition Tyres British Trials and Rally Drivers Association Championship on the Wold Construction North Humberside Forest Rally. The 21yr old Welshman competed for the second time in the TEG Sport International Group N specification Subaru Impreza on the Willerby based event.

The Aberdyfi driver was also partnered for the second time by Machynlleth co-driver, Mark Lewis and having not been in the car since the last British Trials and Rally Drivers Championship round, the Malcolm Wilson Rally, the pair using the event to test some new suspension settings. Setting consistent top twenty times, Humphreys is confident as he spends more time in the car the additional speed is not too far away.

"We had the car back on Friday and had no time to test, so we used the rally to try some new settings which have proved a worthwhile exercise as it feels a lot better inside the car. We also tried some new brakes, which worked very well, in fact I felt we were braking far too early at some points. I believe this was one of the best runs I have had in my short time on gravel and the car never missed a beat. Im sure there is a lot more to come from the car and myself."

After completing the six special timed stages, the Welsh pair finished 15th overall and sixth in the Group N showroom class.

Humphreys and Lewis will now contest the Astra Stages National Rally 2005, a qualifying round of the Welsh National Rally Championship qualifier on Saturday, 9th April 2005. The North Wales forests of Clocaenog and Aberhirnant will provide the setting in the next stage of Humphreys hectic schedule for April.

Two weeks after the Astra Humphreys and Lewis will contest both the Panaround, another Welsh National qualifier and the Gwynedd Rally, supporting events to the first round of the Kwik-Fit Pirelli British Rally Championship, The Rally of Wales. While the BRC event runs over both days, the Panaround will take place on the Saturday with the Gwynedd on the Sunday.

"Doing four events in one month will certainly help me get more experience in the car and get more familiar with the cars capabilities and far more confidence on the loose surface."
