Westbrook gears up for Imola Supercup

Reigning Carrera Cup GB champion Richard Westbrook will open his Porsche Supercup campaign at Imola in Italy on Sunday 24 April, following victory in the non-championship race at Bahrain earlier in April.Fresh from a double victory at Donington Park in the opening two rounds of the Carrera Cup GB, Westbrook has now confirmed that he will race in the next two Supercup events at Imola (Italy) and Barcelona on 8 May with Walter Lechner Racing."Bahrain was massively important because at that time it was a one-off deal," says Westbrook. "It went unbelievably well. We were P1 all through testing, fastest in free practice, set pole in qualifying, won the race and got fastest lap. It was one of those dream weekends. It was a massive result for me, because it's now extended my stay with Walter for Imola and Barcelona and we’re close to signing for the rest of the Supercup season."I’d been speaking to Walter all over the winter and he had a team sponsor for me that pulled out. He’s always had faith in me; he’s known me from my Opel Lotus days so we go back a long way. He stuck by his word and there was a chance to get a run in Bahrain. He told me to just make the most of it and it was just so important to do well. "I knew it would be a level playing field, as everyone had the new model car and no one got any real amount of testing in Europe. For a one-off race, it was my best chance of going for a win."Now, he is preparing for the Imola race supporting the San Marino Grand Prix and relishes the prospect. "I know Imola really well. I won there in Opel Lotus in 1995 and it’s my favourite circuit. People are going to catch us up, that’s for sure. We’ve just got keep it going, and hopefully we can do the same again. All the people we needed to beat were in Bahrain."After a successful single-seater career, Westbrook returned to racing in the Supercup in 2002. "I feel that there is unfinished business for me in Supercup, especially after the six races in 2002 because I didn’t show what I was capable of. It’s where I need to be and I’d love to go out and win the Supercup."Westbrook switched to the Carrera Cup GB in 2003 and says that was the turning point for his career. "I’ve had two years in Carrera Cup GB and that has been absolutely superb for my career. It has really put me back on track. I’d never really raced in England before 2003 and I’d under-estimated how important it is to race in England. I’ve been able to rebuild my career around the Porsche programme. I love one-make championships; there is nowhere to hide and you have to be on it all the time. Because I’ve done Carrera Cup, the next step up is Supercup!"Westbrook is quick to acknowledge the support and backing he has enjoyed from Red Line Racing, Trakshare, Walter Lechner Racing and Porsche Cars GB. After the Imola race, he will return to the UK to contest rounds three and four of the Carrera Cup GB at Thruxton on 1 May.
