50 years of marshalling

In 2007, the British Motorsport Marshals' Club (BMMC)will celebrate its 50th anniversary. To commemoratethis event, national treasurer George Copeland hopesto put together a history of the club and the changeswhich have taken place in 50 years of marshalling.

George intends it to be a fairly light-hearted history ofmarshalling, but wishes it to be historically accurate. He said: "I need lots more information about the earlydays, if the history is to make any sense. I would liketo hear especially from anyone who remembers theMarshals' Club being formed, the changes this broughtabout and the views anyone in motorsport as to whatpurpose the club might fulfil in the future.

"What was marshalling like before the Marshals' Clubcame along? How quickly did the club make animpression on the marshalling scene? Some people inauthority thought that it would become a marshals'union and that there would be strikes and all that wentwith the worst of unionism at that time. Thankfully, thisnever was the case. By the time I became involved, many who harboured these suspicions had become theclub's greatest supporters."

George would like to contact people with personalmemories of the very early days of the BMMC, or whoknows how to contact anyone who might. He wouldalso like to hear anecdotes about marshallingoccurrences, and stories about interesting charactersinvolved with the BMMC or marshalling in general.

Once enough contributions have been received,George plans to organise them. As he said: "I amsure I can rely upon some of our journalist friends tohelp, if this proves to be beyond my limited literarytalents. . ."

Should it become worth publishing, all proceeds willgo to BMMC club funds, for allocation to suitablemarshalling causes.

All contributions should be sent in writing to:George W CopelandEmail: macgwc@aol.comPost: Long Barn House, Ravenstone, Nr Olney,Bucks MK46 5AS.
