M4 Speed cameras spark protest

Wiltshire and Swindon Camera Partnership’s rollout of speed cameravans on the M4 has triggered a new drivers’ road safety protest group.Called simply 'M4 Protest' (www.m4protest.org), they plan a slow driveprotest along the M4 through Wiltshire on Saturday 30th April.

M4 Protest hopes this action will show the driving public'sdissatisfaction with speed cameras in the run up to the generalelection, and show that safe driving is too complex to be measured inmiles per hour.

Campaign founder, Robin Summerhill said: "After £700 million pounds ofspeed camera fines, road deaths are going up, yet the greedy camerapartnerships simply keep expanding, placing more and more cameras. Themotoring public is at breaking point and something has to give.  Ibelieve it is important that the entire ethos of speed cameras in theUK is re-examined from the very foundations."

Drivers and motorcyclists will be gathering at 10am on Saturday 30thApril 2005 at two motorway service stations - one in the east ofWiltshire and one in the west.  People wanting to join the protestshould visit www.m4protest.org for news or information about how tojoin in.

Robin continues: " We've been running for less than 24 hours andalready the response is amazing.  I hope drivers and riders will turnout in big numbers on the day.  Speed cameras are an issue thataffects road users everywhere. Let's hope that the politicians get themessage - we're not going to stand for it any more."

M4 protest was founded by Robin Summerhill.

Robin, a 52-year-old Housing consultant from Wiltshire, has 4 grown upchildren and has never been fined for speeding in his 37 years ofmotoring. He has also never been involved in protest action before, but feels that the M4 cameras are the last straw. He feels thatsomething positive needs to be done, to let the Powers-that-be knowthat these cameras do not have the strong support amongst the publicthat they think they have.
