Westbrook takes Supercup lead
Richard Westbrook took the early championship lead in the Porsche Michelin Supercup after scoring maximum points in the opening race at Imola (Italy) on Sunday (24 April). In front of a huge crowd for the San Marino Grand Prix, Westbrook starred in an action-packed race.Westbrook was only headed at the finish by guest racer Luca Riccitelli, but took 20 points to get his bid for the Supercup title off to a perfect start. Having won both opening rounds of the Porsche Carrera Cup GB, Westbrook now leads two major championships!Driving for the Walter Lechner Racing team, the reigning Carrera Cup GB champion qualified fifth. "We saved a set of tyres for the race, so we always knew we'd be strong in the race. I actually got squeezed down to sixth at the start, but then just started picking them off," said Westbrook."My fight against David Saelens was just fabulous and I finally got him with a risky move. Then Patrick Huisman and I fought right up until the penultimate lap." Once into second place, Westbrook challenged raced leader Riccitelli, but the VIP racer was defending fiercely."Riccitelli didn't have the championship points consideration," said Westbrook. "I wanted to win the race overall, but he was being very aggressive and I'm just happy with the 20 points. We were more than quick enough to win the race and I set the fastest lap of the race on the last lap!"I would like to dedicate this success to my team boss Walter Lechner Snr and his family. Their devotion to motorsport is simply amazing. Most of all I hope their son Walter Lechner Jnr gets better very soon. It's great to be leading two championships and now its back to Carrera Cup GB at Thruxton next weekend."
