Hear the names Aston Martin, Ferrari, Maserati, Lamborghini, Porsche and Corvette and you instantly visualise striking, high performance cars - with a price tag to match. Even so, 2004 figures from these marques indicate their popularity is very much on the rise in Britain and worldwide.

Indeed, with Ferrari announcing that over 4900 Prancing Horse cars sold in 2004, the Ferrari Maserati Group posted the highest turnover in its history, approaching Euro 1.5 billion in 2004, up on the 1.26 billion in 2003. Porsche too had record financial figures in the fiscal year 2003/2004, with group turnover rising by 13.9% to 6.36 billion Euro. Meanwhile, Lamborghini sold a record 1305 cars (425 Murciélago and 890 Gallardo) in 2003, the performance car marque’s fortieth year.

And it’s not just in the showroom these cars do battle. With the Royal Automobile Club Tourist Trophy celebrating its centenary at the British round of the FIA GT Championship at Silverstone on 15th May 2005, motoring and motorsport enthusiasts alike will be waiting in anticipation to see who really is ‘King of the Road…. and the Track’!

George Kennedy, Secretary of the Royal Automobile Club comments, “The cars participating in this event really are remarkable feats of engineering available on the market today. This is the perfect opportunity for owners, and ‘aspiring owners’, alike to see ‘their’ beautiful cars in action and being tested to the limit by talented drivers.

“The Royal Automobile Club Tourist Trophy was the event that all great racing drivers wanted to win in its heyday and the FIA Championship provides the perfect setting for the award of the Trophy in its hundredth year.”

The three-hour race begins at 10:15am so fans should make sure they get to Silverstone early enough to soak up the atmosphere before the start.
