0-300mph in the time it takes a Porsche to get to 60mph!
Europe's most prestigious televised drag racing event, round one of the FIA European Drag Racing Championship, kicks off at Santa Pod Raceway from 27th - 30th May 2005, with "The Main Event".
You're sat at the lights. Behind you is a monster 8ltr V8 engine. Under your right foot is 6500bhp, and ahead of you is a quarter-mile of tarmac. The lights go green, your ear drums explode, and you experience g-forces that would make an F-16 pilot weep. Five seconds later, you've crossed the line doing 300mph, and you're deploying parachutes to slow you down. Welcome to "The Main Event" at Santa Pod.
Tipped to be the most fiercely contested round of the Drag Racing Championship, the Santa Pod Main Event is four full days of burning rubber, raucous exhausts and fiery engines guaranteed to get the adrenalin pumping.
British contender Andy Carter will be competing to defend his 2004 title in the FIA Top Fuel Dragsters. At last year's event, he smashed the official European record, going from 0 to 306mph in the time it takes a Porsche 911 to get to 60mph!
The televised event is a major crowd puller, and crowd pleaser, attracting 20,000 visitors. During the Spring Bank Holiday weekend, over 250 different crazy cars and bikes blast down the purpose built quarter-mile track in a scrap to find the fastest and maddest men and women on the planet. And being a single quarter-mile track, every spectator gets to see all the action from every race from start to finish!
"The Main Event" is a great family day out with Sportsman classes, helicopter rides, sideshows, music and traders completing the line-up of entertainment. And every ticket holder gets full access to the pits for free, where you can meet the drivers and mechanics, and get up close and personal to the fire breathing machines.
The quick-fire event includes Funny Cars, Pro Stock Cars, 200mph Pro Mod doorslammers, Junior dragsters, the 270mph Jet Car, and round one of the nitro-burning Top Fuel Bikes in the UEM European Drag Bike Championship. Hanging onto the 200mph Top Fuel Bikes, these riders have to remember not to raise a finger, because at these speeds such a move could sweep them clean off their machines!
