Lockie & Saul take pre-war double

Calum Lockie and Roger Saul scored a glorious double victory in the opening races of the Motor Racing Legends Pre-War Sports Car Series at Donington Park on Saturday (30 April).Lockie was sharing Saul's magnificent Alfa Romeo P3 in the first pair of races in the international series for pre-war sports cars and they duly won both 45-minute races during the Top Hat Racing Festival at Donington.Despite damp conditions in qualifying, Lockie set pole position by more than two seconds. Saul then started the first race and, having briefly dropped to second, was quickly back into the lead and building a useful advantage over the rest of a strong field. "The opposition just seemed to fade away with minor problems and Roger handed the car over to me in the lead," explained Lockie.Calum then just had to finish the work that Saul had started and was able to later ease back his pace to win clearly. Later in the day, in the second 45-minute race, Roger again started from pole position and stayed at the head of the field until he handed the beautiful Alfa over to Calum at half-distance. "I did a couple of quick laps and was then able to cruise to victory," said Lockie. Their tally for the weekend was two pole positions, two wins and two fastest laps!"It was a cracking debut in historic racing," said Calum. "It is a fantastic opportunity to race such an iconic car and I'm very grateful to Roger for the chance to race the Alfa." Lockie and Saul are now set to team up again for the Pre-War Sports Car races at Porto (July) and at Spa-Francorchamps in September.
