Drag bikes head to Crail Raceway

The UK’s fastest street bikes will head to Crail Raceway this weekend (Saturday 14th  & Sunday 15th May) to take part in the Scottish stage of the Straightliners contest, the largest street bike drag competition in the country.

With bikes pulling in speeds of around 180mph, the Straightliners’ events are attracting a growing number of enthusiasts annually, who are willing to travel hundreds of miles across the UK to compete. Also attending the Crail event will be Streetfighters, the country’s best selling magazine for modified street bikes and sponsors of the Straightliners event along with tyre manufactures Pirelli.

Crail Raceway is the only Scottish venue to hold Straightliners, and this weekend marks the fourth stage of the competition out of a total of twelve. The competition follows the breakout rule, where each entrant enters into a class ranging from 12.5 seconds down to 9.5 seconds.  If they go faster than the lower level time limit for the class they entered, the biker will automatically be re-classified into the faster class.

The fastest modified bikes at the drag event take part in the Top Bike and Competition Bike classes, pulling in speeds of under 8 seconds on the standing quarter.  Currently leading the pack is Phil Wood on his 1500cc Susuki Hayabusa, holder of the fastest ¼ mile in Scotland record  - 7.9 seconds at 172mph - who returns to Crail as part of the Top Bike class.

The event will be staged as a ‘Run What You Brung’ weekend, which offers all those who wish to participate from across Scotland, the chance to pit their skills against the UK’s fastest street machines.   Although Straightliners is a bike event, organizers stress that all vehicles are welcome.

Spectators can also enjoy special stunt shows over the weekend from Scotland’s top performer Mark Gillespie, performing his extreme two-wheeled show.

Gates open at 9.30am  - 5.00pm, on both Saturday and Sunday. The finals will run on Sunday afternoon.  Admission is  £7.00 on Saturday and  £10.00 on Sunday.   A full weekend ticket is £15.00.
