Spa date for Michelin Porsche Club

One of the biggest race meetings of the season for competitors in the 2005 Michelin Porsche Club Championship comes next with a triple-header at Spa-Francorchamps over the weekend of 4/5 June. The fact that the Porsche Club GB has arranged no less than three races at the peerless Belgian track will make this a pivotal weekend in the championship. Anyone having a bad weekend will suffer enormously in the title race, while almost 100 championship points await anyone managing to win three times at the incredibly challenging track. To date, Ian White (3.2 Carrera) has won three times, while Kevin Harrison (968CS) has won once. Harrison missed the most recent race at Oulton Park after his car suffered head gasket failure in qualifying, so the pressure is now on the Kent fire-fighter to close the gap on the hard-charging White. Also 968-mounted is Mark Lillington, who was only denied a podium finish at Oulton by a detached exhaust.Leading the chase of White and Harrison will be Ian Oliver (Carrera RS) and Richard Harrison (3.2 Carrera), but it was student Lewis Tootell who was the sensation of Oulton Park in his debut race in his 968CS. He has never seen the Spa circuit before, and is aiming to fit in the race weekend around college exams, but will surely learn quickly if his pace at Oulton is a guide. The fastest of the class two cars will not be far adrift of the class one pack and with Snetterton double class winner Richard Lambert returning to the fray for Spa, he will start favourite for the Belgian races at a track he knows better than many of his rivals.Castle Combe winner Tom Segrue (944 S2) and Oulton Park winner Marcus Carniel (911SC) are both strong class two contenders and will likely rejoin the mighty battle they enjoyed at Oulton. Teenager Marcus Clutton (911SC) is another with no experience of Spa, but he will be keen to come back strongly after crashing out in Cheshire. The 911SCs of Colin Ingram, Chris Milne and Graham Howells along with the 924 Carrera GT of David Botterill all add quality to the class two pack.Paul Goldman (911SC) took a Snetterton double in class three, but was just headed home at Castle Combe by Ben Demetriou (911SC). Car problems at Oulton Park prevented Demetriou starting the race, so he will head to Spa seeking more class three success.
