Simon Hughes Czech update
Hughes keen for more Czech successTop Welsh rally driver Simon Hughes makes his third trip to the Czech Republic this week, as he aims to make it win number two in the Skoda Fabia Rallye Cup. The 22 year old from Colwyn Bay is determined to take a firm grip on the championship after an excellent start to the season on the opening two rounds. Hughes won the opener and finished second on the recent Valasska Rally.Partnered by experienced Ulsterman Glenn Patterson (Stranraer), Hughes now heads to the southern region of the central European country, and the SEAT Rallye Krumlov. The two day event offers a mix of short and long bumpy tarmac stages, and Simon knows that he will have to be flat out from the start if he is to fend off the challenge of highly rated local ace, Josef Sedlacek. The Czech driver was in unstoppable form on the recent Valasska Rallye - his home event, and Hughes is hoping that a switch to slightly less familiar territory will even out the local advantage, and the pair will be able to battle hard for the lead. Hughes is under no illusion that his task this weekend is an easy one, and has prepared himself for a event long battle with the Czech star.Simon's MAX Racing prepared Skoda Fabia 1.4 has been re-prepared ahead of the rally, and despite the relatively long layoff since the last round of the series, Hughes cannot wait to get started this weekend:'Its been frustrating having to wait over the past few weeks. We gave a good account of ourselves on the Valasska Rallye, but there was simply no stopping Josef (Sedlacek). He really made the most of his home event and local knowledge, but hopefully a switch from the North East of the country to the South East will lessen that advantage over us. We're certainly keen to try and repeat our performance from the opening rally of the season where we won. I know for certain that MAX Racing will have the car in good shape, and with a good recce behind us, I'm confident that we can have a good battle with Josef and the other Skoda Fabia Cup crews on this one.'The two day rally offers plenty of 'seat time' for Simon. Starting mid afternoon Friday, Hughes will cover over 50 miles of asphalt stages near the town of Cesky Budejovice, home of a famous brand of alcoholic drink. Hughes and Patterson won't have time to take on board any samples however, with a late finish that evening, before a 7am restart on the Saturday. Another 90 miles of stages will stand between the crew and the rally finish after a punishing schedule, taking in 14 special stages. The rally finishes at 6pm on Saturday with a town centre finish in Cesky Krumlov.Championship information can be found on fabia-cup.com along with news, rally information and photographs from the rallies that Simon contests this season.- Championship Positions - Skoda Fabia Rallye Cup 2005 (after Round 2)- Simon Hughes 35 points- Josef Sedlacek 35 points- Lubomir Vokal 22 points- Miroslav Levora 12 points- Antonin Novak 12 points
