Lando Norris secured his first victory of the 2026 FIA Formula One World Championship with a controlled drive in the Hungarian Grand Prix, finishing ahead of Max Verstappen and Kimi Antonelli after a dramatic afternoon at the Hungaroring.

Starting from pole position, Norris lost the lead to McLaren team-mate Oscar Piastri on the opening lap. The Briton went wide and the Australian used a cutback at Turn 2 to move ahead and established himself at the front, while Norris remained close throughout the opening stint.

Behind the McLarens, Verstappen moved into third place, ahead of Ferrari drivers Lewis Hamilton and Charles Leclerc. Both Ferraris had started on Soft tyres, but their early pace advantage was limited as they became caught behind the Red Bull.

Hamilton was the first of the leading group to make a scheduled stop, switching to Hard tyres on lap 14. Verstappen responded one lap later and initially emerged behind the Ferrari but reclaimed the position with a move at Turn 1.

Norris continued to apply pressure to Piastri after the first round of stops. Despite appearing to have stronger pace at several stages, the reigning World Champion was unable to overtake on a circuit where following closely is always difficult.

The decisive phase began when Piastri made his second stop on lap 34. He rejoined among traffic and encountered Carlos Sainz and Fernando Alonso in the opening sector. Contact with the Williams cost Piastri valuable time, although both cars were able to continue.

Norris stayed on track and used his clear air to produce a sequence of quick laps. When he completed his own second stop, he returned to the circuit ahead of Piastri, reversing the order between the two McLarens.

After passing Antonelli, who had extended his opening stint in an attempt to reduce the number of stops, Norris moved back into the effective race lead. Piastri was unable to respond before retiring on lap 56 with an apparent gearbox problem.

The McLaren’s stoppage triggered a Virtual Safety Car and prompted further pit lane activity. Norris held a sufficient advantage to stop for fresh tyres without losing first place, while Verstappen remained on track and moved into second.

Antonelli also stayed out to secure third position. Hamilton initially appeared to have retained the final podium place during the VSC sequence, but timing at the relevant control line placed the Mercedes ahead. A subsequent five-second penalty for Hamilton, issued for speeding in the pit lane, removed any remaining chance of a top-three finish.

Norris controlled the closing laps to take the chequered flag 15.080 seconds ahead of Verstappen. Antonelli resisted late pressure to complete the podium, with Leclerc classified fourth and Hamilton fifth after the penalty was applied.

Isack Hadjar finished sixth in the second Red Bull, while George Russell recovered to seventh after an anti-stall issue at the start dropped him to 19th.

Liam Lawson led the midfield runners in eighth for Racing Bulls, ahead of Audi’s Nico Hülkenberg. Arvid Lindblad claimed the final point in 10th, with Gabriel Bortoleto narrowly missing out in 11th.

Pierre Gasly finished 12th for Alpine, followed by the Aston Martins of Lance Stroll and Fernando Alonso. Franco Colapinto, Esteban Ocon, Alexander Albon, Sainz and Oliver Bearman completed the classified runners.
