Welsh ace Kevin Davies couldn't quite make it seven wins from seven starts this year, as the 20 year old from Llanfihangel-ar-Arth took second in class A5 on this weekend's Cambrian Rally, final round of the Silkolene 1400 National Rally Championship. Davies had built a near three minute lead before sliding off the road on the penultimate stage, dropping four minutes in the process, and dropping to second in class as a result. The worst of the Welsh weather had hit the stages of Penmachno, Cynwyd and Clocaenog in the run up to the event, and treacherous wet conditions lay in wait for Kevin and co-driver Emyr Jones (Llandysul) and their Yokohama shod Nissan Micra Kit Car. The EXL Windows, KJ's Eden Tours and David Harries & Co backed duo had been unbeatable in the class all year prior to the event. With the Class A5 title firmly in the bag, Davies was under no pressure and his plan was to push the Geoff Jones Motorsport run machine to its limit on the Llandudno based rally.Davies started well, finding that the super soft Yokohama tyres were biting in to the slippery gravel and mud and giving the youngster plenty of confidence as a result. Kevin soon began to build a comprehensive class lead, and was also battling hard for 3rd in the overall Silkolene 1400 standings. Davies set a string of impressive stage times, but all the good work was soon to undone on the slippery penultimate stage, Hafotty.Kevin arrived into a series of corners too quickly, and the Micra slid off the road, landing virtually on its nose. Incredibly the car was completely undamaged, and the young Welshman was grateful to the many spectators who came to his aid and retrieved the stricken Nissan. After four minutes of struggle, the Micra would be back on stage, and Davies was able to breathe a sigh of relief. Unfortunately, Davies held a two minute and fifty second lead going into the stage, so his time loss meant that he could not get the class lead back on the final stage in Alwen.Disappointed to have made a mistake, Davies was nether the less happy with his excellent stage times on the day:'To be battling for third in the overall Silkolene 1400 class is something to be pleased with' said Kevin. 'We tried to push to our limits today, and I was very pleased with the way things were going. Unfortunately we came into one corner just a little bit too 'hot', and rather than risk rolling the car, I aimed for some soft grass. Unfortunately there was a large ditch on the other side and the car went in nose first - almost like doing a handstand! I must say a big thank you to all the boys who helped us get back on the road, as they were very determined to get us going again. As a result we lost the class lead and dropped out of the top ten of the 1400's, but it was still a great rally to do and I really enjoyed the testing conditions of the roads. It was also nice to see how far we have come, as its exactly a year since we did the first rally in the Micra last year. It has been a great year and it has gone far better than I ever could have hoped for. I hope 2006 can be equally successful!'Davies and his team are currently working hard behind the scenes to get their plans for 2006 in progress.
