Metcalfe robbed of Championship third
Jeremy Metcalfe ended an otherwise superb opening Formula Renault UK Winter Championship weekend pondering what might have been after seeing third in the standings quite literally stolen from his grasp in round two.The Team AKA sensation headed into the second of Sunday’s races high in confidence after taking an excellent fourth place finish in round one, by far his best ever result in Formula Renault UK. But a somewhat rash overtaking attempt by Italian Fabio Onidi confusingly saw Metcalfe excluded from a fifth-placed finish.Rather than concluding the weekend an incredible third in the driver standings on 42 points, Metcalfe has to be content sharing joint-eighth position with 2005 Formula Renault UK Graduate Cup winner Richard Keen, having been adjudged by the Clerk of the Course to have caused Onidi to retire from round two on lap 12 at Druids Hairpin.“It’s a pretty harsh decision”, commented Metcalfe “Onidi could have chosen not to take to the grass to try and pass me, I saw him do that in my mirrors, but he did and went off as a result. I was deemed to be the cause of if which is unfair in my view.”Metcalfe’s mood after round two couldn’t have been more in contrast to his delight at achieving fourth position in the first of the day’s races. A damp circuit made conditions very tricky but the 17-year-old conducted himself well, just missing out on a podium after James Sutton managed to pass him for third place on lap nine. The original race start was aborted when Markus Niemela stalled in his third-placed grid slot and the Finn’s team-mate Richard Keen then ran into the back of his car. When round one did get underway again, Metcalfe held third position from the start but a slight mistake allowed Sutton through at Druids Hairpin.Speaking on his best ever Formula Renault UK result Metcalfe said: “It was good but my lack of experience compared to the others at the front showed at the start really, I didn’t find my feet fully until the fourth or fifth lap.“The experienced guys were going flat out round a couple of corners which I wasn’t, but we’re still learning all the time. At the end my lap times were only a couple of 10ths of a second off what the front two guys were doing so I’m pleased with that.“I’m happy but it was a shame not to get a podium. Relative to what we were doing all year though in the main championship, to be fourth is a great result.”Rounds three and four of the Formula Renault UK Winter Championship take place at Croft Circuit in North Yorkshire next Saturday, 12th November. Official testing will be held on Thursday, 10th November, with ‘free practice’ following on Friday, 11th November.
