Red flags deny Metcalfe top spot
Jeremy Metcalfe was in imperious form throughout official testing yesterday at Croft Circuit, heading the times for almost the entirety of the two sessions but being forced to settle for the fourth fastest time overall after his final run on new tyres was cut short by red flags. The 17-year-old Team AKA sensation, still in his maiden year of Formula Renault UK competition, began his preparations for the final two races of the Winter Championship in superb style and the Fleet-based driver is confident of ending the series on a high. For the majority of the morning the 2.12-mile North Yorkshire track was wet but towards the conclusion of the session it did begin to dry-up somewhat and so competitors were given the opportunity to switch from wet-weather tyres to slicks.Having ended the wet three-hour morning session fifth fastest with a lap of 1m 19.623 seconds (96.16mph), Jeremy eventually concluded the day fourth quickest overall with his afternoon’s best, on a drier track, of 1m 18.042 seconds (98.11mph) – but that doesn’t tell the whole story.“We were fastest most of the day but our run on new tyres at the end of the afternoon session turned into a complete disaster”, Jeremy explained. “We went out on new rubber but the car wasn’t handling too well so I wasted the best of the tyres really.“I came back into the pits to put some more front wing on to help the handling and then on my second lap back out on the circuit I managed my best time of the day. We would undoubtedly have gone much quicker at the end but then the session was red flagged and so there was nothing I could do.”He added: “It’s very frustrating but we had a great day and made a lot of improvements so I’m confident we can go well in qualifying on Saturday. Hopefully we’ll have another good run in free practice tomorrow to put us in the best possible shape for the last two rounds of the championship.”As at Brands Hatch Indy Circuit last weekend, Jeremy was the best of the Team AKA drivers, just outpacing experienced team-mate Rodolfo Gonzalez and bettering fellow AKA driver Oliver Oakes by more than one and a half seconds. The championship competitors will be active again today, Friday, 11th November, during ‘free practice, with qualification and the final two rounds of the 2005 Formula Renault UK Winter Championship taking place on Saturday, 12th November.
