MSA Championships Season Review 9

AUTOTESTRAC BRITISH AUTOTEST CHAMPIONSHIP

The season commenced in April and although the eventual champion did not take FTD on that first event he did win his class. Malcolm Livingston in the venerable Lotus 7 was the FTD man but Paul Swift driving his Mini 1400 Special fought back and was the overall winner on the next five events and so clinched the Championship.

Livingston again won overall on the last event in September and became runner-up, having been placed first class on all the other rounds. Third overall was decided in Stephen Morten’s favour, driving a 1400cc Sylva Stryker. Morten improved immensely over the course of the season to take third position but was closely challenged by Roger Holder (2003 champion) in his immaculate Mini 1400 and Gavin Dickson driving an equally immaculate Nova 1400 – the latter also improving greatly during the season. The speeding Swift was absolutely delighted to win the Championship for the second successive year.

As far back as 1999, he was saying that he thought the MSA Championship was the one to go as it could be done on a relatively small budget, relying more on talent rather than spending huge sums on the car. Swift also said that it has opened up doors for him in his work of putting on driving demonstrations at various functions. He will be at Earls Court from 17-20 November at the MPH 05 Exhibition doing just that with several other drivers. Will 2006 make it a hatrick for Paul? He will certainly be trying hard again to make it so.
