Jo Ramirez left his native Mexico in 1962 to pursue his dream of a career in motor racing, and after nearly 40 years in the sport, he retired from his position as Team Co-ordinator at McLaren in 2001. Jo’s remarkable CV includes spells with Ferrari, Maserati, Lamborghini, Dan Gurney’s All American Racers, Porsche Gulf Sport and Tyrrell, as well as Copersucar, Shadow, ATS and Theodore. He worked alongside drivers such as Pedro and Ricardo Rodriguez, Jackie Stewart, François Cevert, Niki Lauda, Alain Prost, Ayrton Senna and Mika Häkkinen.
He is perhaps best-known for his time at McLaren, including the legendary Prost/Senna era, during which he formed strong relationships with both drivers as they fought for supremacy both on and off the track. Jo is now enjoying his retirement and lives in Oxfordshire. Here is Jo’s story in his own words.
“Jo Ramirez is a Formula One legend who is not only one of the sport’s most popular and respected personalities but someone who I am proud to know as a personal friend. His life story, anecdotes and behind-the-scenes memories of the motor sport greats he has known, places he has been and things he has done make an enthralling read.”

On Ayrton Senna:
“At the 1990 Mexican Grand Prix I’d asked my sister to make a cake for Ayrton celebrating his hundredth race. Unbeknown to me, Ayrton had cut the cake in half, and when I turned round half of it ended up on my head!”
On Bernie Ecclestone:
“A small man with a big brain who has done much for the sport.”
On Alain Prost:
“As a person he was always very friendly and attentive, as a professional he was certainly the easiest champion we ever dealt with. Although he was a superstar, it was never obvious – he was very down to earth.”
