... at Wimbledon
Spedeworth South’s top drivers from four formulas fought it out at Wimbledon Stadium on November 27th for the Best in Britain title in their respective racing class.
The awesome National Hot Rods title was taken by 105, Deane Wood, who showed he had lost none of this racing skill in his time away from the track as promoter of Spedeworth South. Wood led from start to finish and despite some strong challenges from 278, Colin Gomm and 75, Nigel Steward he was not to be denied the title. There was no doubting Wood’s victory on the night, but Gomm had a place docked, taking him to third behind Steward’s second for illegal contact during the race.
Metal bashing was the order of the day as the 1300cc Stock Cars appeared and the drivers pushed, barged and spun their way around Plough Lane. Early leader 514, Danny Orr was overhauled as 463, Chris Woods battered his way to the front of the pack just ahead of the waved yellow caution flags for a driver needing to be recovered from a car stalled on the racing line. When the green flag resumed racing with 8 laps to go Woods put the pedal firmly to the floor and held off a determined challenge from 53, Paul Anscombe to take the title. Third place was taken by 41, Willie Skoyles Jr.
The powerful, non-contact 2.0 Hot Rods were also in title action on the night. As the rubber burned from the clutch start 60, Mark Paffey quickly stamped his authority on the race by screaming away from the rest of the pack. Early challenger 209, Kim Weaver faded from the race as he was overhauled by 110, Jason Wilks who went on to chase Paffey home in second place. Third spot went to 96, Kevin Randall.
The ever-popular Superstox contested their Best in Britain race and treated the fans to a display of high-powered racing to round off a great night’s action under the floodlights at Plough Lane. When the dust settled after 25 very rapid laps it was 454, Dave Pike who had claimed the laurels, ahead of a very hard-charging defending champion, 60 Ben Majoram. The third spot went to star driver 376, Steve Jackson.
There will be more action at Wimbledon Stadium on December 11th when the Metro Bangers, the ground-shaking V8 Stock Cars and the incredible Siamese Racers take the track at Britain’s finest stock car racing venue.
