Pritchard Ends Rally With Maximum Attack

A traumatic weekend full of disapointment and severe weather conditions are the only way to describe the final round of the Citroën C2R2 Cup 2007 for Jason Pritchard. As another Citroën driver, Sebastian Loeb secured his fourth World Championship title, it was a different affair for the young Welshman, who was making his debut in a World Rally Championship event on the Wales Rally of Great Britain. The Builth Wells driver, who had dominated and was leading the C2R2 Cup going into the final round in his Quick Motorsport prepared FCS Lasermail/North Road Garage Citroën C2 was feeling confident ahead of the rally that he could maintain a pace throughout that would suffice for him to take the championship honours. As Pritchard and co-driver Martin Jones of Brecon started the first day amidst heavy fog and rain the pair were confident of keeping in front of their nearest championship rivals but were aware of the challenge that lay ahead of them over the demanding Welsh terrain for the next three days. The opening day had going to plan with Jason and Martin having done all required of them on the special timed forestry stages of Port Talbot, Resolven and Rheola in South Wales. The pair headed back to final service in Swansea only to experience mechanical trouble with the electronic control unit on the road section, which resulted in the pair having to use SupeRally rules to be classed as a finishers after day one. As the rally would be split into two championship scoring rounds for the C2R2 Cup with day one as one score and day two and three the second score. The overall results had shown the Welsh pair as leading the C2R2 Cup at the end of the opening day. However, a technical rule that applies for the series meant they would not collect maximum points and would therefore drop to third despite their rally lead.Jason had hoped day two would be his favourite as the rally would visit the forests of Crychan, Epynt and Halfway in Mid Wales, all within a short distance of his home. However, the day was short lived with wheel studs shearing losing the wheel on the front left of the Citroën towards the end of the day's opening test in Crychan, which again forced the use of Supe Rally to allow the pair to contest the third and final day. Jones was full of admiration for the young pilot Pritchard despite their exit from the stage."Jason drove really well through there, he was smooth, quick and his lines through the bends were inch perfect. His driving has come along with each rally we have contested this year and he is showing much more confidence in his car control which has also showed in him not putting a mark on the car all year."Day three and with no problems, Jason and Martin started the day in fourth place in the series with a mountain to climb. Four stages remained in the rally and six minutes was the deficit from second place. Normally stage times are separated by seconds, but this was no normal rally and the pair set about their task taking huge chunks of time off their rivals and was just 53 seconds off second place after two stages. Over the remaining two stages they claimed second with a clear seven minute advantage. However the technical rule came into play again and demoting the pair to third. This has resulted in Jason taking third in the overall championship, while Martin claims second place in the co-drivers title.  Jason reflected on his season at the finish,"We have had a mixed and disapointing season with some good results at the start of the year, but we have been plagued with mechanical problems and this rally has been typical of our year. Friday and Saturday were mechanically flawed and today has been great with our times reflecting the pace we were at. We were catching several cars on each stage and the car ran well today. The rally certainly has been an experience and we would have enjoyed it much more had we completed more of the stages. Reliability has cost us the championship. We will start making plans for next year over the coming weeks. We would like to thank FCS Lasermail and North Road Garage for all their support this year." Jason and Martin have been supported in their 2007 campaign by FCS Lasermail and North Road Garage, Builth Wells.
