Pre-registration has closed for the three Renault Sport UK Championships with the total number of pre-registered cars standing at a staggering 156. Each of the three individual Championships has attracted more pre-registrations than the number of Championship registrations permitted by the regulations.
This raises the possibility of capacity grids for the Formula Renault UK with Michelin Championship, Formula Renault BARC Championship and ELF Renault Clio Cup.
The process of pre-registration was introduced after a successful 2007 season, enabling teams and drivers to signal their intent to compete in 2008. Pre-registered competitors will be the first to exclusively receive Championship registration forms, ahead of the registration period opening on the Renault Sport UK/Super One Kart Championship stand at 09.00 on Thursday, 10th January at Autosport International at the NEC, Birmingham.
Five teams have each pre-registered four cars for the Formula Renault UK Championship, including reigning Entrants champion Fortec Motorsport. It is joined by multiple Formula Renault UK champion Entrant Manor Competition, Carlin Motorsport, Sport Promotions Ltd and CRS Formula Renault, formerly known as AKA Cobra.
The total number of Formula Renault UK Championship pre-registrations is 44, with a limit of 32 Championship registrations.
The Formula Renault BARC Championship has established itself as an excellent training ground for drivers looking to step up to Formula Renault UK. In its final season involving both 2004-2006-specification cars in the FR2000 Class and pre-2000 cars in Club Class, a massive 60 pre-registrations have been received. Forty-seven of these are in FR2000 Class with 13 Club Class.
There is a limit of 36 Championship registrations, with 10 of these places reserved for Club Class up until the close of Championship registration on Monday, 4th February.
In 2007, the ELF Renault Clio Cup saw capacity grids at nine of the 10 race meetings and interest in the Championship, which enters its second year using the New Clio Cup race car, continues to flourish. A total of 52 pre-registrations have been received, with a limit of 36 Championship registrations.
Reigning Entrants champion JHR Developments plans to enter five cars, while Mardi Gras Motorsport, Total Control Racing, Robertshaw Racing, Team Pyro and Full Speed Racing have all pre-registered four cars.
