School visits from tin-top drivers

COUNTY SCHOOLS GET CHANCE TO WIN VISIT FROM TOURING CAR DRIVER

THE stars of the HiQ MSA British Touring Car Championship are racing back to Rockingham this April and children across Northamptonshire are being offered the chance to win a school visit from one of the top drivers.

Britain’s biggest and glitziest tin-top motor racing championship is 50 this year, and to celebrate its golden anniversary, Rockingham has launched a competition for school children aged seven to 11.

Youngsters are being asked to design a promotional poster, which shows the different cars that have raced in the series over the past five decades. The competition will be judged by a star touring car driver, who will visit the winner and their class to present their prize and give a talk.

The lucky winner will earn some superb art equipment for their class plus family VIP hospitality at Rockingham’s BTCC meeting on Sunday, April 13. Their winning poster will be on display at the circuit and they will receive a signed, framed edition of their poster to keep.

In addition, each child who enters the competition will receive a free ticket for themselves and an accompanying adult, to come and watch the drivers battle it out in rounds four, five and six of the championship.

Rockingham’s Director of Sales & Marketing, Charlotte Orton, said: “This is the second year we have run a schools competition in partnership with the British Touring Car Championship.

“We were absolutely thrilled with the high standard of entries we received last year, and the winner thoroughly enjoyed his visit to Rockingham with his class and family.

“Once again this year’s competition offers a fantastic prize and we hope it will catch the imagination of children and teachers across the county, and inspire as many youngsters as possible to enter.”

To help schools gain inspiration for their posters, they are welcome to visit the circuit on Wednesday, March 12. From 1pm members of the public have the chance to get a sneak preview of the team line-ups for 2008.

The drivers and cars will be out in force and the pupils will be able to soak up the pre-season atmosphere and catch all the action on track as the teams test their highly tuned 290bhp engines for the first time this year.

Competition packs have been sent to primary school head teachers, which includes an entry form. Closing date for entries is Thursday, March 20, and the winning school will be notified by Monday, March 31.
