2007 Rookie takes on 2008 Targa

Queensland’s Darren Kurzok is set to push his 1968 Datsun H510 1800 SSS to the front of his class when Targa Tasmania comes to a roaring start on April 15.

The 25-year-old entered the event for the first time in 2007 and took advantage of the new ‘Rookie Rallye’ being offered.

“We did the Targa Tasmania Rookie Rallye last year and we came third in the classic section,” Kurzok said.

This recent addition to the rally has attracted many motoring enthusiasts who want to compete in a world class event, without the need to tackle all five days.

“[The Rookie Rallye] is a good little sample for the full event. Obviously the full event can be quite time consuming so it’s good to see what it’s all about first.”

Numbers for this year’s Rookie Rallye have again exceeded 30.

The introduction of the Rookie Rallye for Targa has allowed many boys’ dreams to come true - to build or restore a car and compete amongst legends.

“We built the car from scratch,” Kurzok said. “It’s been a bit of a weekend hobby where we would go down every Saturday and tinker with the car.”

The 1968 Datsun is his pride and joy and he loves bringing it to Tasmania.

“The public are so nice and Tasmania’s a really good place, it’s like a second home for us down here now,” he added.

Targa Tasmania gets underway on April 15 in Launceston, and will come to a grand finale at Hobart’s Wrest Point on April 20.
