AT MONACO GRAND PRIX
Max will make his World Series Renault debut this weekend, supporting the Monaco Grand Prix….
He will be driving for the Comtec Racing team, who he tested with last year. It will be a big step up for the 18 year old who has shown blistering pace in this season’s International Formula 3 Series.
Obviously excited at the prospect, Max explained that the opportunity came about very recently and he was treating it as a chance to get to learn the Monaco circuit;
“Martin at Comtec asked me to drive for them last week. It’s a great chance to go and drive the Grand Prix track and I’m really looking forward to that. It is quite a jump in performance over the F3, but I drove the World Series car at Paul Ricard and at Valencia at the end of last year and found it OK. My aim is solely to learn, I don’t have any real performance targets, but I want to do a good job. Monaco can spring a surprise or two with the results so you never know.”
Max has taken three out of the four available pole positions so far in F3 this season and finished on the podium twice. The World Series opportunity probably won’t bring that level of success this weekend and there will be no pressure on Max, as Comtec team Principal and ex Grand Prix driver Martin Donnelly explained;
“Max has tested for us a couple of times at the end of last year, but when he gets in the car for Thursday practice it will be a massive learning experience," he said. "It doesn't matter if he is one second off on the first day, as long as he stays away from the barriers and gets the laps in I am sure he will be able to go to bed that night and sleep easy in knowing that there will be plenty more time to come. He is doing this for a view to furthering his career, whether that will be in GP2 or World Series, but after Monaco he'll be back concentrating on Formula 3."
