Iconic cars that pay special homage to their homeland head for the Mecum Monterey stage
Having earned 16 Formula 1 Constructors' Championships and 15 Drivers' Championships, Scuderia Ferrari reigns at the pinnacle of motorsports as the most successful racing team in Formula 1 history. The oldest surviving Formula 1 team, having contested every World Championship season since 1950, Ferrari has always translated that racing success to its renowned road models, infusing them with exceptional performance, desirability and a virtually unbeatable aura.
Celebrating that incomparable mystique, The Tricolore Scuderia Collection will honor Italy's motorsports tradition and Ferrari's dominance at the upcoming Mecum Monterey auction with an exceptional assemblage of modern Ferrari legends, including five choice V-8 models complemented by a stunning V-12 F12tdf and more.
While Ferrari is most often associated with founder Enzo Ferrari's preferred V-12 engine layout, the marque's V-8 model lines are equally renowned for their outstanding performance, ideal mid-engine balance and aggressively functional styling. Just as the 360 Modena ushered in a new era for Ferrari’s V-8 lineage, the F430 and then the 458 Italia continued the momentum at Maranello.
Styled by Donato Coco at the Ferrari Styling Centre with Pininfarina, the 458 Italia debuted at the 2009 Frankfurt Motor Show and bristled with Formula 1-derived technologies throughout. Among them, the 458’s aerodynamic package included deformable aeroelastic winglets in the front grille that deploy at higher speeds, providing increased downforce as needed.
Although capable of exceeding 200 MPH, the 458 Italia was developed into the uprated 458 Speciale, a higher-performance variant produced from 2014 to 2015. Enhancements included a more powerful 597 HP engine specification, forged wheels and a taller rear spoiler, yielding exceptional performance for road and track. Finished in Bianco Avus, celebrating Ferrari's 1-2-3 podium sweep at the 1959 German Grand Prix held at the AVUS circuit, this example’s factory-painted tricolore racing stripe adds further distinction.
Offered with just 914 miles, this 458 Speciale's stunning performance is enhanced by a 7-speed F1 dual-clutch automatic transmission, side-slip control, electronic differential, F1 traction control and the first use of a new prefill braking function that delivers quicker stops. A Nero Alcantara interior with Giallo technical fabric, carbon fiber accents and embroidered Ferrari Cavallino headrest stitching contrasts the clean white finish. Iconic Scuderia Ferrari shields grace the front fenders of this modern thoroughbred and provide an ideal finishing touch.
The Ferrari 458 Speciale A debuted at the 2014 Paris Motor Show, with the “A” suffix denoting "Aperta" or "Open," adding a glamorous convertible variant to the high-performance 458 Speciale. Just 499 were produced, precisely one less than projected demand. Featuring Ferrari's 4.5L/597 HP naturally aspirated V-8 engine, it became the most powerful street-legal, naturally aspirated Ferrari convertible ever—a status it held until the 2017 LaFerrari Aperta. Capable of accelerating from rest to 62 MPH in just 3 seconds, the 458 Speciale A could reach 199 MPH flat out.
Ferrari's brilliant 4.5L V-8 was named International Performance Engine of the Year in the Best Performance Engine category for 2011 and 2012 by a worldwide panel of journalists. The more-potent “F136” specification used by the 458 Speciale and 458 Speciale A took this honor in 2014 and 2015.
Finished in Bianco Italia with special Italian tricolore stripes, this one-of-499 458 Speciale A is a visual and technical tour de force. Its 4.5L/597 HP F146 V-8 engine pairs with a 7-speed dual-clutch transmission. Performance is maximized by advanced aerodynamics, F1-Trac traction control, side-slip control, magnetorheological damping and carbon-ceramic brakes with yellow calipers behind forged wheels. Extensive carbon fiber and Alcantara define the driver-centric interior, while a retractable hardtop provides open-air pleasure and weather protection. Scuderia shields appropriately grace the front fenders.
While victory at the 1949 24 Hours of Le Mans created Ferrari's endurance-racing legacy, four consecutive Tour de France wins (1956-59) established the competition mystique of the 250 GT berlinetta. The launch of the 550 Maranello in 1996 marked Ferrari's first front-engine, V-12 Grand Touring berlinetta since the 365 GTB/4 Daytona in 1973. Development continued through the 575, 599 and their derivatives, followed by the 6.3L V-12 F12 berlinetta that debuted at the March 2012 Geneva show, demonstrating Ferrari's latest engine and powertrain technologies.
The F12 served as the basis for the even more potent F12tdf, so named in commemoration of the Tour de France—the first time a Ferrari V-12 berlinetta bore that name since the late 1950s. Launched in October 2015, the F12tdf took the concept to new levels in engine performance, aerodynamics and driving experience.
The 6.3L naturally aspirated V-12 featured a race-derived valvetrain and F1-style variable-geometry intake trumpets, producing 769 peak HP with 519 lb-ft of torque. Power was sent through a rear transaxle housing Ferrari's revised F1 DCT 7-speed dual-clutch transmission with shorter gear ratios, while extensive carbon fiber yielded a 243-pound weight reduction.
Comprehensive aerodynamic updates help the F12tdf generate 570 pounds of downforce at 124 MPH—nearly double the F12. Ferrari's Passo Corto Virtuale rear-wheel steering system automatically adjusts rear wheels to the optimal angle, reducing oversteer while maintaining sharp response. Extreme Design one-piece brake calipers derived from the LaFerrari provide incredible stopping power.
Factory-quoted performance figures include race-worthy lap times, 0-60 MPH acceleration under 3 seconds and a 210 MPH top end. Just 799 examples were produced—again, one unit less than Ferrari's projected market demand.
This 2017 Ferrari F12tdf is offered with 89 miles at the time of writing. Delivered new to Canada and custom ordered through Ferrari's Extra Campionario program, it features a Pininfarina-designed aluminum body finished in Bianco Italia with special Italian tricolore stripes, complemented by a Bianco and Nero leather interior. Performance comes from Ferrari's Tipo F140 FC/FG 6.3L/769 HP V-12 paired with a 7-speed dual-clutch automatic. Advanced aerodynamics, magnetorheological dampers, carbon-ceramic brakes with Rosso Corsa calipers, electronic rear-wheel steering, and Pirelli P-Zero Corsa tires on black-finished 20-inch forged wheels maximize performance. A matching luggage set completes this modern legend.
