FIRST FUEL VOUCHER SCHEME FOR MARSHALS
Castle Combe circuit has become the first motorsport venue in the UK to help volunteer race marshals with their travel expenses to attend major meetings.
Castle Combe Racing Club, which organises the Wiltshire circuit’s racing events calendar, has launched a new £2,000 initiative which gives members of each team of marshals the chance to win a £10 fuel voucher in a prize draw at each meeting.
The idea was inspired by a scheme which has been working successfully for the Sports Car Club of America, and was proposed by Castle Combe circuit’s chief marshal Nicky Fawdington who saw it in action while marshalling at Daytona and Sebring circuits in Florida.
“We launched the scheme here as a trial at Easter and it was hailed a great success, so now it will be a regular feature at each major race event,” said Nicky. Her husband Adrian, who has been a marshal at the circuit for more than 30 years, said they organised the scheme through the national gift card company SVM Europe Ltd and arranged for the prize fuel vouchers to be redeemed at Tesco filling stations.
“The prize draw is a lot of fun and is proving very popular as a way of helping the marshals to offset their travel expenses,” he said.“It is big first for Castle Combe circuit and a novel way to say thank you to all the marshals who give their time to help ensure that major race events run smoothly and safely.”Most of the 220 marshals at the circuit live within a 60-mile radius of the circuit off the M4 near Chippenham, but some travel from as far as Devon, Dorset, South Wales and even Lincolnshire to attend events. “We do it for the love of motorsport and to be involved in the action and help make it happen,” said Adrian.
