Porsche Carrera Cup heads to Croft

Just two points split the leading contenders in the Porsche Carrera Cup GB heading for rounds nine and ten at Croft (13/14 June) as defending champion Tim Harvey battles to fend off the chasing pack, headed by Tim Bridgman. It has already been a superb season for the Carrera Cup GB, with excellent grids, four different race winners and intense competition across all three categories. The Croft weekend marks the last leg in a run of three race weekends in five weeks and is also the start of a seven-week summer break, so the races at the North Yorkshire track will have even greater importance than usual.Currently, Harvey (Red Line Racing) has just two points in hand over Bridgman (Team Parker Racing), and it was Bridgman who scored a mighty double victory at Oulton Park. However, Michael Caine (Motorbase Performance) and James Sutton (Red Line Racing) are also firmly in contention as the title race heads towards the halfway point. On sheer pace, Bridgman is the man to beat. He's taken pole for every one of the eight races to date, but at Thruxton and Donington that pace did not translate into race wins. However, at Oulton it all came right back together and he won twice to move within an ace of Harvey in the title race. While Harvey has been ultra-consistent, the ultimate pace is not quite there at present and finishing off the podium at Oulton was a rare event for a driver who has scored 80 podiums in 112 Carrera Cup races. Caine, too, has had a couple of poor weekends by his own high standards, and a non-finish at Oulton has hurt his campaign. Meanwhile, Sutton, the 2007 champion who missed the first two races before rejoining Cleveland-based Red Line Racing, is chasing hard to make up lost ground and expects to be strong at Croft.Striving to bridge the gap to the championship big four is Carrera Cup Scholarship winner Tom Bradshaw (Team Parker Racing), while fellow scholar Lewis Hopkins is working to make his way up the order with Red Line Racing. The pro-am1 category is also delivering some great racing this season, with at least six drivers chasing the title. Local hero Robert Lawson (JHR) has taken a slender lead but can expect more fierce opposition from Tony Gilham (Red Line Racing), Glynn Geddie (Team Parker Racing), Ollie Jackson (Motorbase Performance), Derek Pierce (JHR) and Michael Leonard (Team Parker Racing). In the previous race weekend at Oulton Park, Lawson bagged a double pro-am1 victory to make it four wins form eight races and so he is the man in form coming to his home track. But all five of his key rivals are potential winners, and Geddie will be looking to show well at the scene of his sensational Carrera Cup debut a year ago.In the pro-am2 category, Bob Lyons (Celtic Speed) and Paul Hogarth (IN2Racing) are the strong contenders, while the 2009 debut of George Brewster will bring the Celtic Speed squad up to three cars alongside Lyons and pro-am1 racer Tommy Dreelan.
