Nathan Freke is just four points away from the Michelin Ginetta G50 Cup as the teams head to Brands Hatch for the final three Michelin Ginetta G50 Cup races of the year. It has been a great season that has been dominated by the Kidderminster racer Freke since May.
True, he struggled at the start of the season allowing Carl Breeze, Frank Wrathall and Dan Welch to each have a taste of the winner’s champagne but then, at Donington, Freke came on strong. He took a win in each of the three races and backed that up with a win at Oulton Park. With title rival Carl Breeze leaving Cheshire with a wrecked car, the championship took a different direction...
Breeze struggled at Croft, too, and was dealt a further blow when he and the TCR team ran his car on wets at Silverstone ... on a drying track. With Freke now having scored 12 wins, Breeze can only be second at best, His target is five-time winner Frank Wrathall who could – just – outscore Nathan to the title...if Nathan forgot to set his alarm clock or went to the wrong track or stayed in the pub. Realistically, it would be a freak result if Nathan lost it now.
However, there will be some great racing all through the field as the last chance to score points comes via the three races this weekend. For fourth in the standings, there is a fight between TCR’s Fulvio Mussi and the IDL car of Tom Sharp, both of whom have proved that they can run at the front while Chris Dittman returns for these final races and should fly – all season he has been on the brink of a win but has had to be content with seconds and thirds.
The Chairman’s Cup, for the over 40s, is headed by Colin White who has been a big hit in his first year in Ginetta racing. Against him is the Speedworks car of Richard Sykes and recent newcomers Ken Rattenbury, Tony Hughes and Neil Houston, all of whom could spring a surprise.
Qualifying begins at 09.00 on Saturday October 3 with race one (over 10 laps) starting at 14.15. Race two, lasting for 14 laps, leaves the grid at 17.00 with Sunday’s race starting at 13.30.
