MOTORCYCLE racing is heading back to Rockingham for the first time in six years when the Northamptonshire circuit hosts the final meeting of the Thundersport GB 2009 championship.
In its second year, Thundersport GB is the UK’s second largest bike racing series and offers riders and fans alike the chance to watch a variety of awesome two-wheel machines. The championship roars into Rockingham over the weekend of October 17/18 with a number of titles still up for grabs.
The Aprilia Dunlop Superteen 125cc Challenge continues to provide some of the most competitive action of Thundersport GB. The championship is famous for creating the stars of the future such as James Toseland, Casey Stoner and Bradley Smith who started their road racing careers in this series.
The Superteen riders head to Rockingham with just four races of the championship left and five riders still in the hunt for the title. Thirteen-year-old Wayne Reid leads the pack but Lee Jackson, Connor Tagg, Matt Davies and Ben Gautrey could still have a say.
Once the young guns have outgrown the Aprilia 125cc production motorcycle they move up to the 125GP machines in the Thundersport GP3 class with a pace just as hot as the National 125GP championship.
Youth development is the jewel in the Thundersport GB crown, but the series also offers 600cc and 1000cc races, with thrilling action from the Moto 450 and Streetfighters classes, while the biggest and meanest bikes battle it out in the GP1 Powerbike category.
Also featuring on the packed timetable at Rockingham are Formula 600, Superstock 600, Sound of Thunder, Junior Powerbikes and MiniTwins, plus the Bridgestone Thundersport 500 Championship which will see Jonathan Harrison and John Butcher fighting it out for the silverware.
All the action will take place on Rockingham’s 1.7 mile National Circuit, and will be televised on Motors TV and Sky Sports. Rockingham Director Charlotte Orton, said: “We are delighted to be hosting the Thundersport GB race meeting at Rockingham for the first time. Bike racing has a great following and we look forward to welcoming a new audience to the circuit for this event.”
Tickets are only available on the gate and cost £10 each day. As usual children aged 15 and under who are accompanied by an adult get in for free. There's also free access to the paddock to check out the off track action and free bike parking on a specially reserved tarmac area.
