Lockie and White 2nd at Britcar Silverstone

Calum Lockie and Paul White claimed a fine second place in the Britcar Six-Hour race at Silverstone on Saturday evening (3 October), but were disappointed that the race did not bring the overall victory that was well within their reach."We should have won by a good margin," said Calum after they turned in a great performance in their Mosler MT900. "But there was a mistake on fuel strategy during a safety car period that cost us victory when we lost a lap."White only concluded a deal to use the Mosler from Rollcentre Racing on the Monday before the race and both drivers sampled the car for the first time during a track day on Wednesday. They then had testing on Thursday before qualifying on Friday and the race, which started at 4pm on Saturday."We were up against two more Moslers, which had around 60bhp more than our 550bhp car as well as some other developments. So I expected to qualify third, but I was just 0.089s off the car of Ben Clucas to be P2, and I know I lost over six-tenths of a second to traffic on my best lap," said Calum. "Paul never put a wheel wrong and did a 1m56s, which was excellent given that this was his first time in a car of this type."The race start was clean and it soon settled down with the three Moslers at the head of the 42-car field, with Clucas leading Lockie and Phil Keen. Knowing that he had better fuel consumption than the more powerful cars, Lockie was pleased to match their pace. Keen later moved ahead, but was soon out with gearbox problems and the oil dropped by the car gave Lockie a big moment when flat out through Woodcote.Lockie moved ahead when Clucas made his first stop and ran 90 minutes, including a fuel stop. White then took over and ran three stints for a total of 90 minutes to maintain their lead. "Paul was holding his own beautifully and then it started to rain, and we brought the car in for intermediates," said Lockie. After the stop, Calum rejoined and had a scare when forced into a spin at Becketts by a slower BMW, but still ran a strong 1h45m stint, including another fuel stop. At times, he was four seconds a lap quicker than any other car. However, their downfall came when the safety car came out. "The safety car was going so slowly that we were stopping on the track and the temperatures were going up," he said. However, while others pitted, the lead Mosler stayed out and that decision was to cost them the race. White finished the race with another strong stint and they were classified second to the Mosler driven by Clucas."Huge congratulations are due to Paul for his first drive in such a machine," said Lockie. "My thanks also go to Strata 21 for their support and the Rollcentre team for turning out such a fantastic car." Trade support for Calum Lockie comes from Dunlop, Grand Prix Racewear, Brian James Trailers and Motul Oil.
