Speedway - Torun latest addition to FIM calendar

Polish speedway venue, Motoarena Torun, is to join the FIM Speedway Grand Prix (SGP) fold with the signing of a new five year deal, BSI Speedway has announced today.

The new stadium, that is widely accepted as the most advanced purpose built speedway stadium in the world, will host its first FIM Speedway Grand Prix event on 19 June 2010 and will continue to host a round of the world championship every year until 2014.

With its fantastic facilities and sell out crowds, the inclusion of Torun on the SGP calendar for the foreseeable future is one that Paul Bellamy, managing director, BSI Speedway, is looking forward to:

"The president of the city of Torun and Torun speedway club had a vision to build one of the best speedway stadiums in the world. This forward thinking club and city council realised that dream and successfully built a state of the art arena. It is a fitting tribute to their hard work and dedication that a round of the speedway world championship will be held at this magnificent arena and without doubt this Grand Prix will be amongst one of the 'must see' events on the calendar."

Celebrating the news of the deal, Wojciech Stepniewski, President of Torun speedway club said:

"It is great news for Torun to stage one of the rounds of the FIM Speedway Grand Prix series. We are delighted to have such a famous speedway event at our modern stadium and we look forward to welcoming supporters from around the world who, I'm sure, will be delighted to experience the unique atmosphere that will be created during our event."The historical city of Torun, with its medieval architecture and bustling Old Town Market is one of Poland's main tourist destinations and will be popular with speedway fans looking to combine the Grand Prix with a weekend break. The confirmation of the Grand Prix is a feather in the cap for the city as Michal Zaleski, Mayor of Torun, explains:

"Today in Torun, we are signing a very important agreement owing to which the 800 year old town of Copernicus will host for the next five years the most important world speedway event – FIM Speedway Grand Prix. The city, which boasts the most modern speedway stadium in the world is fully prepared to organise such an event. The swift and effective decision of BSI Speedway and the Mayor of Torun was welcomed with full appreciation. We are looking forward to the first edition of Speedway GP in Torun on 19 June 2010."

Tickets for the event will be announced at a later date.
