The name behind the revolutionary MD555 turbocharger, Turbo Dynamics (TD), has now confirmed that the pre-production turbos of the new ‘twinscroll’ or twin entry hybrid are here.
The twin entry turbos, fitted with newly designed turbine housings, are presently being extensively tested and validated on a range of vehicles by TD partner and dealer Litchfield Imports. Furthermore, according to Peter Marsh, MD of Turbo Dynamics, the early results are exceptionally promising.
The tests will ensure that the turbos perform as expected and will enable Turbo Dynamics and Subaru specialists Litchfield Imports to build up a database of results that will help Litchfield’s customers choose the right turbo variant for their application.
Iain Litchfield, MD of Litchfield Imports, explained “We are testing the twin entry turbos on specially calibrated 2.0 and 2.5 litre vehicles over the next few weeks. This will provide us with exceptionally detailed data for each turbo variant.”
Meanwhile, Turbo Dynamics has been busy manufacturing and putting together a full kit for the turbocharger, which will comprise of oil pipes, water pipes, water and oil fittings, studs and gaskets. The kit will be available through Litchfield Imports when the turbo officially goes on the market.
It has taken a longer than expected development process to get to this stage, but Peter assures us that the wait will have been well worth while.
“This project has been particularly involved but I am more than confident that the end result will revolutionise the performance tuning of these particular cars, as well as offering a greater choice to the end users” said Peter.
Alongside this project, TD has designed a new range of compressor housings for the ‘twinscroll’ turbo, which will be suitable for use on all vehicle models, including the latest ’09 spec cars that run with fly-by-wire throttle. The housing is available with two different air ratio sizes and different inlet configurations, including TD’s popular ‘ported shroud’ anti-surge machining modification. These clever and adaptable compressor housings will be available from both TD and Litchfield.
The twin entry turbo has been designed as a bolt-on replacement for the Subaru Imprezas, JDM Twinscroll cars and Litchfield Imports’ Type 20 & Type 25 cars. The new model comes ceramic coated and will support a power range of 380 BHP to over 500 BHP. This follows suit of TD’s MD555 turbo which is renowned as the “Ultimate Subaru Turbo” and comes in two variants: 380-480 BHP with a retail price of £1395+VAT and 500+ BHP at £1495+VAT.
