Tom Cave was today invited to take part in a presentation by the organisers of the Richard Burns Memorial Rally to the trustees of the Richard Burns Foundation. The organisers presented the charity with a cheque for £32,146, raised on the event in August, on which Tom won his class.
The presentation was made on the eve of the 2009 Rally of Great Britain, on the start ramp of the event. In addition to personnel from the organisers and Royal Air Force Marham, where the rally took place, there was also a fly-past by a Hawk jet piloted by Matt Doncaster, himself a competitor on the event.
Today's presentation saw Sergeant Peter Taylor and Flying Officer Steve Keys hand the cheque to David Lapworth, chairman of the trustees. The money was raised directly by the King's Lynn Motor Club, organisers of the event to support the RBF, following the former WRC champion's flight in a Royal Air Force Tornado from Marham several years ago.
Tom competed on the rally in August and was co-driven by Neil Cole, presenter of the FIA World Rally Championship programme on digital TV channel Dave. He won his class on the event, which he thoroughly enjoyed, citing the incredible atmosphere, as this is the only rally in the UK to run on a major live Royal Air Force base.
Commenting on the occasion, Tom said: "I was incredibly honoured to be asked to participate in such a worthy activity. The event itself was amazing - Neil and I had such a good time and the atmosphere was fantastic. When I was asked if the presentation could be made in front of our car, I was delighted to be able to help out."
This weekend will see Tom's second Rally GB before his 18th birthday, his first last year ending with a class win of more than 15 minutes.
