Australian V8 Ute Racing

Miedecke sets slick time in V8 Ute Qualifying at HomebushSydneysider George Miedecke was the fastest V8 Ute in Qualifying at Round 8 (the finale) and has moved closer to a shot at the Series Title in the 2009 Yokohama V8 Ute Racing Series – protected by Armor All at the Sydney Telstra 500, Sydney Olympic Park, Friday, 4 December.

“To get pole the last two rounds shows that it’s not a fluke and  proves we can get up there so I’m really looking forward to it,” said Lubrimaxx Racings “Slick” Miedecke.

The V8 Utes were the first cars on the inaugural Sydney Olympic Park with the tight concrete canyon catching out Ryal Harris who hit the wall hard on the second lap of practice, red flagging the session.

Harris was checked out at the medical centre and was fine, although the Holden was heavily damaged around the front end.

In Practice two all 32 Utes made it around the tight track unharmed with Miedecke already posting claim to the fastest time on the track.

Qualifying in the late afternoon was called off early after Kim Jane also went into the tyre wall at turn 8.

“I tried to go to third, which can bring on some under-steer and it did, which caused me to go into the tyres. I tried to reverse out but I didn’t budge and got stuck,” said Jane.

With only four V8 Utes (Miedecke, Andrew Fisher, Grant Johnson and Layton Crambrook) posting a time, qualifying was red flagged and re-scheduled in the late afternoon.

Reigning champion Layton Crambrook wasn’t far off  Miedecke pace and was second followed by Jesus All About Life Racings Andrew Fisher and Series front-runner Coopers Pale Ales, Jack Elsegood who made it four in a row for Ford.

“The name of the game for the weekend is to stay ahead of Grant and not concede any points, so I’m happy at the moment,” said the former NRL star and current series leader.

The fastest Holden was 2007 Champion Grant Johnson who is still chasing Elsegood for the title and will be looking to make up some points tomorrow.

Kim Jane made up for his earlier mishap and forged over the line in 7th position ahead of Bathurst winner, Gary MacDonald. Narellan Pools, Brad Patton posted a great result qualifying 8th ahead of teammate Craig Dontas and Gary Baxter who rounded out the top ten.

Rookie Jason Gomersall also hit the wall in qualifying with heavy front end damage to the iseek Ford. The delayed qualifying session worked for Ryal Harris who was able to get back on track following his practice crash.

Race 1 will kick off at 5:25pm tomorrow (Saturday, 5 December) right before the highly anticipated Cold Chisel come-back.

The V8 Utes will be back on the track on Sunday, 6 December for the final two races and the crowning of the 2009 V8 Ute Champion.

Race 2 will commence at 9:50am and the final race for the 2009 Series will begin at 12:45pm (EDST) and will be televised live on Network Seven.
