British Speedway weekly round up

BIG EVENT LATEST... TAI Woffinden insists the British Under-21 Final is high on his list of priorities this season. Woffinden will ride in the Grand Prix series on a full-time basis for the first time as well as regular league action in England, Poland and Sweden. But the 19-year-old wants to win the national junior title at Lakeside's Arena Essex Raceway on Friday, April 16. He said: "I know what it means to win a national title and I'll be gunning for it at Lakeside on that night. "I've got a busy year, it's going to be non-stop for me but this is a meeting I will be trying to win. "I'm not doing the World Under 21 rounds this year because I was using that competition as a way in to the Grand Prix, but it doesn't mean I don't want the national title. "It's going to be a really hard meeting, there are a lot of good young riders who can do well in that event and I'll have to be on top form to win it." Woffinden will also figure strongly in the second Super 7even event of the year - on his home track. The British Final returns to Wolverhampton on Monday, June 14, and he will be pushing to win the title for the first time. The Super 7even series was hugely popular last season and is expected to be equally successful this time around with the venues carefully selected for maximum fan appeal. Further news updates and line-ups for major events in British Speedway are available at speedwaygb.com - the official website of the British Speedway Promoters' Association. SUPER 7EVEN SERIES 2010 CALENDAR British U21 Final, Lakeside, Friday April 16 British Final, Wolverhampton, Monday June 14 Premier League Pairs, Somerset, Friday July 9 Premier League 4TT, Peterborough, Sunday August 15 Elite League Pairs, Ipswich, Saturday September 4 Premier League Riders Championship, Sheffield, Sunday September 26 Elite Riders Championship, Coventry, TBC ELITE LEAGUE LATEST... BELLE Vue are sweating on the fitness of Charlie Gjedde ahead of next Monday's Elite League opener against Coventry, after the Dane sustained a knee injury in a pre-season practice session. New Aces skipper Hans Andersen said: "Charlie has been really unlucky over the last couple of years and this injury was a real blow because he's been out since last July with a shoulder problem. "He will start the season with a five-point average and there is no doubt that he is capable of a much higher figure than that. I know he has worked so hard throughout the winter to get everything right and now he has been hit by another injury problem." COVENTRY manager Alun Rossiter gave credit to Glasgow after the Bees were upset by the Premier League club in an inter-league challenge at Ashfield. Rossiter said: "I'm obviously disappointed to lose the meeting but the bigger picture was giving our riders track time and also the opportunity to test a lot of things out, so it was certainly worthwhile in that respect. "We were weaker than we'd planned to be and they'd strengthened by bringing in Joe (Screen) who has started the season in brilliant form, so it ended up with a close match which was good for the crowd." EASTBOURNE will go into the Elite League season without the benefit of a warm-up after their scheduled challenge fixture against Peterborough was rained-off. But manager Trevor Geer is still confident that the Eagles can upset the bookmakers and make a strong bid for a play-off place. Geer said: "We go into the season looking to surprise all the pundits who again seem to be tipping us to finish bottom." IPSWICH will christen their new-look circuit in Thursday's home challenge fixture against Lakeside, the Foxhall track having undergone extensive alterations over the winter. Director of Speedway Chris Louis said: "It's a brand new season - we've got new riders, new race suits, a new logo and a new track which will provide some of the best racing in world speedway.  "I think everyone is particularly looking forward to Thursday, when we get a chance to see action on the new track for the first time." LAKESIDE manager Jon Cook views Friday's Elite Shield second leg against Wolves as the opportunity to restore some confidence after a 62-34 defeat in the first leg. Cook said: "Clearly we were second best all night and I hope that was just down to it being our first match with Wolves having started their season the week before. Certainly I never expected that to make such a difference and we can't just put it down to just that.  "We have a Challenge match away at Ipswich on Thursday to blow away a few more cobwebs, if that's what is needed, but we need to be back to our best on Friday if we are to head into the League campaign with confidence." PETERBOROUGH newcomer Lewis Bridger has targeted the retention of his British Under-21 Championship title, as well as the World Under-21 crown - and he also aims for a Wild Card place at the British Grand Prix. Bridger said: "Obviously I want to keep my British Under-21 Championship. I want to be winning the World Under-21 as it's my last shot and just have a great year. "Hopefully I'll get to Cardiff if it's as wild card, first or second reserve, I want to be part of it. That's the dream." POOLE boss Neil Middleditch believes that avoiding injuries will be one of the Pirates' main challenges during a season which they are set to enter as Elite League title favourites. Middleditch said: "2009 was a year to forget and the club are determined to put that all behind us, and I think that is obvious when you look at the team that Matt (Ford) has assembled. "It is a side that has great potential and I believe my biggest worry is keeping them all safe. These guys have such a hectic schedule but that can have its plusses too as helps to keep them 'in the zone'." SWINDON'S new manager Ronnie Russell says he will make time for each individual rider in his team as he bids to get the best out of the Robins' 2010 line-up. Russell said: "I see the seven riders in the team as seven individual characters. They all require a slightly different way to get the best out of them. "I don't go for the 'on block', there's seven of them. They have all got little strengths and they have all got little weaknesses."  WOLVERHAMPTON are in pole position to win the Elite Shield after a powerful all-round display saw them run up a 62-34 victory over Lakeside in Monday's first leg. The Monmore men commence their defence of the Elite League title when they face Swindon at home next Monday. Skipper Tai Woffinden said: "It felt good out there and it was my best meeting so far. It puts us in a good position for the return and I'm sure we can go there and finish the job." PREMIER LEAGUE LATEST... BERWICK are contemplating their options to cover the injury absence of Lee Complin, who has undergone surgery on a broken arm sustained in just his second race of the season. The Bandits are not in team action as this Saturday they stage a Testimonial meeting for popular Czech Michal Makovsky, with Grand Prix rider Kenneth Bjerre agreeing to take Complin's place in the line-up. BIRMINGHAM boss Graham Drury is refusing to get carried away with the Brummies' impressive start to the season, having won both legs of their M6 Trophy clash with Stoke. Drury said: "We are a new team gelling together, and although I'm very pleased with the way things are going, I still feel there is more to come." EDINBURGH star Kevin Wolbert is delighted to be back with the Monarchs for a full season after making a big impression during his stint with the club last year. Wolbert said: "I so enjoyed myself with the Edinburgh team last season and had no hesitation in signing up with them for this year. I like the Armadale track, it suits me, and I'm hoping to score some big points this season." GLASGOW boss Stewart Dickson hailed his side after their dramatic victory over Elite League club Coventry in last Sunday's Ashfield season-opener. Dickson said: "There was a moment during the match when things could have turned around big style when they got that 8-1 followed by a 5-1 to take the lead, but the next heat answered a lot of questions about the character of the team when Travis (McGowan) and Josh (Grajczonek) went out and got the 5-1 to all but win the meeting." KING'S LYNN celebrate the life and career of their former rider Ashley Jones with Wednesday's annual Memorial meeting at the Norfolk Arena. Stars manager Rob Lyon said: "Every season the club tries to think of a fitting way to celebrate Ashley's life, and this season we seem to have a very exciting line-up. I believe it will be an extremely close meeting." NEWCASTLE boss George English was a relieved man after the Diamonds were held to a draw by Berwick - which was still enough to win their Tyne/Tweed battle on aggregate by four points. English said: "I had visions of us losing this trophy tonight with three to go, but Kenni (Larsen), Rene (Bach) and Mark (Lemon) fought well to hold things together and give us the overall win in a superbly entertaining meeting filled with great racing which did indeed go down to the final heat in the competition." NEWPORT have made a change of team plans by signing Australian youngster Alex Davies, who replaces New Zealander Grant Tregoning - who was unable to commit to the club's deadline for his arrival in the UK. Wasps owner Steve Mallett said: "We regret having to take this action but the new season approaching something had to be done. We hope that Grant will still join the Wasps in the future and we have not shut the door." REDCAR are looking to bounce back from last week's defeats against Workington when they face Newcastle in their first local derby of the season on Thursday. Bears boss Brian Havelock said: "Since Speedway was relaunched on Teesside in 2006 the Bears have enjoyed much the better of results against the Diamonds in all competitions. However 2009 witnessed a turning point even though we again had a good season ourselves. This is a really good Newcastle team and we will need to be at our best in all departments to contain them." RYE HOUSE go straight into Premier Trophy action against Somerset on Saturday after their planned challenge fixture against Leicester fell victim to the weather. The Rockets also face trips to King's Lynn and Somerset in a busy first week of action. SHEFFIELD skipper Ricky Ashworth insists his side will bounce back from their Premier Trophy opener against Scunthorpe, where a nightmare start saw the Tigers 20-3 down after four heats. Ashworth said: "We haven't become a poor team overnight just because of one bad result and we need to put together a good performance down there to bounce back. We're ready for it." SCUNTHORPE boss Richard Hollingsworth was pleased to collect all three points from the Scorpions' first meeting of the season, and believes they can add more to their total at Sheffield on Thursday. Hollingsworth said: "It was good to get the first meeting out of the way, and pleasing to see all seven riders contribute. They can all ride the Sheffield track well, so I'm very much looking forward to the return leg." SOMERSET will hand debuts to four new riders in Friday's Severn ridge Trophy clash with local rivals Newport. Shane Parker, Steve Boxall, Tommy Allen and Sam Masters have all joined the club over the winter - and former Rebels riders Ritchie Hawkins and Jay Herne are also back in 2010. STOKE boss Malcolm Vasey was disappointed to launch the season with home and away defeats against Birmingham in the M6 Trophy - but he expects the Potters' young team to come good. Vasey said: "We have to do better, we all know that and I'm sure that we will. We open our Premier Trophy campaign on Friday at Scunthorpe and we will be looking at the rider order as I feel there are a few improvements that we can make that will perhaps help us."  WORKINGTON celebrate their 40th Anniversary meeting by welcoming back a host of former favourites to Saturday's celebration event at Derwent Park - and Steve Lawson is set to face Jeff Powell in a special match race. Comets boss Ian Thomas said: "They are dead keen to give it a go round the circuit again, although it will have changed a wee bit since they competed. It fits in nicely with the 40th anniversary celebrations so we were happy to put their challenge on the bill for Saturday." NATIONAL LEAGUE action gets underway during April and you can find all relevant news, reports and other information in the NL section onspeedwaygb.com . FIXTURE PICTURE... WEDNESDAY MARCH 24: PREMIER TROPHY: Birmingham v Sheffield 7.30 CHALLENGE: Poole v Swindon 7.30 ASHLEY JONES MEMORIAL: King's Lynn 7.30 THURSDAY MARCH 25: PREMIER TROPHY: Sheffield v Scunthorpe 7.45 CHALLENGE: Ipswich v Lakeside 7.30, Swindon v Poole 7.30 NORTH EAST CHALLENGE 1st leg: Redcar v Newcastle 7.30 FRIDAY MARCH 26: ELITE SHIELD 2nd leg: Lakeside v Wolverhampton 8pm PREMIER TROPHY: Scunthorpe v Stoke 7.30 BRANDONAPOLIS: Coventry 8pm SEVERN BRIDGE TROPHY 1st leg: Somerset v Newport 7.30 SPRING TROPHY 1st leg: Edinburgh v Glasgow 7.30  SATURDAY MARCH 27: SKY SPORTS ELITE LEAGUE: Eastbourne v Swindon 7.30 PREMIER TROPHY: Rye House v Somerset 7pm, Stoke v Redcar 7.30 MICHAL MAKOVSKY TESTIMONIAL: Berwick 7pm 40TH ANNIVERSARY MEETING: Workington 6.30pm SUNDAY MARCH 28: NORTH EAST CHALLENGE 2nd leg: Newcastle v Redcar 6.30 SEVERN BRIDGE TROPHY 2nd leg: Newport v Somerset 2.30 SPRING TROPHY 2nd leg: Glasgow v Edinburgh 4pm MONDAY MARCH 29: SKY SPORTS ELITE LEAGUE: Belle Vue v Coventry 7.30, Wolverhampton v Swindon 7.30 WEDNESDAY MARCH 31: PREMIER TROPHY: Birmingham v Redcar 7.30, King's Lynn v Rye House 7.30 THURSDAY APRIL 1: SKY SPORTS ELITE LEAGUE: Swindon v Ipswich 7.30 PREMIER TROPHY: Sheffield v Redcar 7.45 FRIDAY APRIL 2: SKY SPORTS ELITE LEAGUE: Coventry v Peterborough 8pm, Peterborough v Coventry 11am, Lakeside v Eastbourne 1pm, Eastbourne v Lakeside 7.30, Ipswich v Swindon 2.30, Belle Vue v Wolverhampton 1pm PREMIER TROPHY: Birmingham v Scunthorpe 7.30, Edinburgh v Newcastle 7.30, Redcar v Sheffield 7.30, Somerset v Rye House 7.30, Workington v Berwick 6.30 SATURDAY APRIL 3: PREMIER TROPHY: Berwick v Workington 7pm, Stoke v Scunthorpe 7.30 NATIONAL LEAGUE: King's Lynn v Scunthorpe 7.30 CHALLENGE: Rye House v USA Dream Team 7pm SUNDAY APRIL 4: SKY SPORTS ELITE LEAGUE: Poole v Wolverhampton 4pm PREMIER TROPHY: Glasgow v Newcastle 4pm, Newport v King's Lynn 2.30 CHALLENGE: Mildenhall v Team Viking 4pm MONDAY APRIL 5: PREMIER LEAGUE: Rye House v Birmingham 7.30 PREMIER TROPHY: Newcastle v Glasgow 6.30, Scunthorpe v Redcar 6pm NATIONAL LEAGUE: Scunthorpe v King's Lynn (follows PT match) CHALLENGE: Isle of Wight v USA Dream Team 7.30, Newport Hornets v Team Viking 1pm TUESDAY APRIL 6: SKY SPORTS ELITE LEAGUE: Wolverhampton v Belle Vue 7.30 WEDNESDAY APRIL 7: SKY SPORTS ELITE LEAGUE: Poole v Peterborough 7.30 PREMIER TROPHY: King's Lynn v Somerset 7.30 CHALLENGE: Dudley v USA Dream Team (at Birmingham) 7.30
