KELLY Moran, one of speedway's most spectacular and popular riders, died on Sunday night after a battle with illness.American Moran, 49, raced for a host of clubs during a brilliant British career and first appeared for Hull in 1979.

Sheffield boss Eric Boocock, who was also in charge at Owlerton during Moran's three-years with the club between 1986-88, said: "This is a very sad day for us all, Kelly was the most naturally gifted rider I have ever seen on a bike - and I've seen a lot of riders down the years. He lived life to the full and liked to party, but what a brilliant rider."

NEWCASTLE continued their stunning start to the season with a 47-43 Premier Trophy win at Glasgow.Kenni Larsen was impressive with his 13-points and Travis McGowan was Glasgow's top man in hid first season with the club on 11.Diamonds boss George English said: "I wanted at least one league point outof every away match and we've got another three."They all work so well as a unit and with Kenni once again leading the way the others backed him up superbly."

KING'S Lynn chief Keith Chapman is excited by the line-up named for the British Semi-Final to be staged at his track on May 12.The draw will be made on Wednesday night for the event during Lynn's meeting with Rye House - and Sheffield will make their draw on Thursday for the semi-final which takes place on May 6.Said Chapman: "This is probably the best line-up I have seen here for any individual meeting in the past few seasons.

"There are no less than five full time Elite League riders, three King's Lynn track specialists and eight other either top riders from the PremierLeague."

REDCAR chief Brian Havelock is hoping to see his side bounce back to winning ways when they face Birmingham at the South Tees Motorsport Park on Thursday.The Bears have been struggling in the early stages of the season but showed improvement in Monday's 50-42 Premier Trophy defeat at Scunthorpe.Said Havelock: "The boys have been left in no doubt what I am expecting of them. This is a tough encounter but the attitude at Scunthorpe on Monday wasfirst class."Praise especially to Jan Graversen who was our top scorer there and is giving us points and options from reserve."

NEW Glasgow signing Travis McGowan inspired his side to a stunning away 47-43 Premier Trophy win over Newcastle on Monday.McGowan scored 13 and had solid support from ex-Diamond James Grieves with11+1. Jason King was the top Newcastle rider with 11.Tigers boss Stewart Dickson said: "I told the boys before the meeting wecould win and I told them to believe. They did the business and on this form there is no way we will be the whipping boys of the Premier League!"
