The Brands Hatch circuit in Kent is the venue for the opening two rounds of the 2010 Porsche Club Championship this coming Saturday, April 10th, with a host of former overall and class champions on show. Reigning champion Jeremy Clark makes his Class One debut after taking both the 2008 and 2009 outright titles, but faces former champions Mark McAleer and Tom Segrue, as well as past Class One champion Pete Morris in what is a well-subscribed and highly competitive top class.
Clark is on an unbeaten run of class victories stretching back to May 2008, but for the first time finds himself in a 968 CS, as opposed to the 944s he has raced until now, and chasing outright victory at the front of the field. Competition will be tough, with regular 968 drivers such as McAleer determined to stamp their authority on the class from the start.
The bumper Class One entry is dominated by the well-sorted front-engined 968s, but other Porsche models will be in the mix, with Kevin Harrison and Marcus Carniel always in the thick of the action in their 964 C2s. Harrison is always quick off the line, as he demonstrated at Brands last year by leading into the first corner from the second row of the grid, the rear-engined Porsches always string at the start of the races.
Others to watch for will be former Class One champion Pete Morris, back for the season in his distinctively liveried 968, and also Porsche Club returnee Mark Sumpter, back in the 911 Carrera he raced with the club back in 1994.
Class Two belongs to the 944 S2s, the model with which Clark had so much success in 2009, with Chris Dyer and Cieran Brewer heading the entry.
In a busy day’s racing, the Porsche Club runners qualify at 09.45, with two races on the Brands hatch ‘Indy’ circuit scheduled for 12.15 and 15.55.
