FIM Speedway GP Janusz Kolodziej handed Bydgoszcz wild card

New Polish champion Janusz Kolodziej has been granted the wild card for the FIM Bydgoszcz Speedway Grand Prix of Poland on October 9.

The Leszno and Vetlanda star makes his second appearance in the No.16 race jacket this season and is clearly in the form of his life.

He finished fourth as the wild card in the FIM Otomoto.pl European SGP at Leszno on April 24, before helping Poland to FIM Speedway World Cup gold at Vojens on August 1.

Kolodziej narrowly missed out on qualifying for the 2011 SGP series, when Swedish racer Freddie Lindgren won a run-off to pip him to third place in the GP Challenge on August 21.

But the 26-year-old made up for the disappointment by winning the Polish Final at Zielona Gora on Saturday. He then helped Leszno to a 51-39 triumph at the same track 24 hours later to give them a huge advantage in the Polish Ekstraliga play-off final.

The Tarnow-born racer could still reach the World Championship for next year if Lindgren finishes in the top eight after the Bydgoszcz SGP.

Should Fast Freddie miss out, Kolodziej will be first series reserve for 2011 and will cover if any riders are unable to take part in a round due to injury, illness or other reasons.

This job is currently being done by Australian international Davey Watt, who stepped into the role of first reserve when Polish racer Piotr Protasiewicz withdrew halfway through the season.

Watt covers for Russian star Emil Sayfutdinov in Bydgoszcz as the 20-year-old is sidelined for the rest of 2010 with wrist ligament damage.

Kolodziej and Watt are joined at the Polonia Stadium for this season’s final Grand Prix round by track reserves Przemyslaw Pawlicki and Artur Mroczka.

Gorzow star Pawlicki has shone alongside Tomasz Gollob and Nicki Pedersen in the Ekstraliga this year, as well as making his name with Coventry in Britain and Rospiggarna in Sweden.

Meanwhile, Grudziadz racer Mroczka has been plying his trade impressively in the Polish First Division.

He has also played a vital role in taking Poole to the top of the British Elite League and has shone for Lejonen when called upon in Sweden.

Pawlicki dons the No.17 race jacket, while Mroczka wears No.18. They will only be called into action should one of the main 16 riders hit the tapes, fail to meet the two-minute time allowance or suffer an injury and be unfit to take a scheduled ride.
