Team Air Asia, Tony Fernandes’ new GP2 team, has announced that FXPM.com will join the team for the 2011 series.
The team, created by Malaysian entrepreneur Fernandes effectively as a feeder team for his Formula One outfit, Team Lotus, will receive sponsorship from the online foreign exchange platform in both the main GP2 and Asian GP2 championships.
Fernandes is also the owner of Air Asia, the low budget airline that has been given title sponsorship of the new team.
“It is a very good example of how far Team Air Asia has already come in its short life that we are attracting commercial partners who see GP2 as a logical platform for their global marketing efforts,” said team principal Riad Asmat.
“We are all excited about the commercial and brand benefits we will bring each other.”
Shelton Fray, vice president of FXPM, added: “This gives us an excellent platform for our brand and we look forward to an exciting season with the team.” In typical fashion, no financial details were released but a non-title GP2 sponsorship deal is likely to have a high five figure value.
The 2011 GP2 Asia series begins in Abu Dhabi on Friday 11th February, while themain series, which supports the European rounds of the Formula One world championship, begins in Istanbul on Saturday 7th May.Source: SportsPro
