2010 Porsche GT3 Cup Challenge Driver of the Year Peter Smallwood has completed the purchase of a 997 GT3 Cup car in readiness for the defence of his title in 2011. The ex-John Quartermaine Carrera Cup cup car is now going through a thorough refresh before hitting the track for the first time in early February and will contest Class One of the series. The car will run under the newly formed Rennsport Racing banner, for a full season in GT3 Cup Challenge including the Porsche World Cup at the Nurburgring in June.
"We are bang on schedule with the new car,” said Towcester-based Smallwood, “it will be at the Autosport International show on the Porsche Club Great Britain stand then back to the workshop for the final pre season base-lining and we should be then good to go. It’s going to be a big change from the 996 but I have some great guys in my corner helping out including Mike
Wilds, Racedata Systems and Fearnsport - we should be fine. "
The 2011 Porsche GT3 Cup seasons starts at Brands Hatch on April 9th, with subsequent race at Croft, Donington Park, Rockingham, Oulton Park and Silverstone. Competitors from the early-season races have the opportunity to contest an international Porsche event at the Nurburgring in June, and the winner of the Driver of the Year title wins the use or a road-going Porsche for a year courtesy of Porsche Cars GB.
“It will be great to have Peter back with us this season, “says series coordinator Steve Kevlin. “To take the Driver of the Year title on his first full season of racing was a fine achievement, and in stepping up to Class One after his success in Class Two he should continue to progress. We are looking forward to a good season with the GT3s”
