The next two races in this year’s Asian GP2 Championship will take place this Friday and Saturday at the Sakhir International Circuit in Bahrain, and Spain’s Racing Engineering team are looking forward to the challenge of racing once again in this very competitive series.Last week saw the opening two races in the 2011 Championship were a series of misfortunes, outside the control of the Racing Engineering team, saw neither of their two drivers, Dani Clos and Nathanaël Berthon, able to score points. However the indications were that both men can look forward to the Bahrain races with a great deal of confidence.
Dani Clos was very quick in qualifying at the Yas Marina circuit in Abu Dhabi and the young Spaniard lined up fourth on the grid for Friday’s race before a startline accident saw him eliminated as the cars left the grid. The whole Racing Engineering team worked incredibly hard overnight to repair the car for Clos but understandably, with no time to test and sort the car, Clos concentrated on bringing it to the finish on Saturday.
For Nathanaël Berthon last weekend was very much a case of learning about qualifying and racing a GP2 car and the Frenchman didn’t disappoint qualifying a strong tenth and running well in the first race until a mechanical failure saw him retire. Things were even better on Saturday when Berthon drove an excellent race to climb from 19th on the grid to finish a very competitive 8th, although a post-race penalty saw him drop to 14th.Racing Engineering are confident that this weekend they will be right at the front of the field and fighting hard for victory in both of the races to be held, they have two very quick drivers and they are learning more about the 2011 Dallara chassis and the Pirelli tyres with every lap they complete.Timetable
