7th & 8th May 2011
It may be two months away but the team at Shelsley Walsh is rapidly preparing for the first hill climb meeting of 2011 season at the world famous venue,
Shelsley Walsh will come out of winter hibernation thanks to the hard work not only of the small permanent team on site but also the volunteers from amongst the club membership of the Midland Automobile Club.
On a Saturday in early April there is our annual Shelsley Walsh Working Party. A horde of enthusiastic club members will descend on the hill with hammers, saws and paintbrushes in their hands to carry out a myriad of important tasks. Together these ensure that the small details are in perfect order in time for that first competition car to come to the line for the first practice run on the 7th of May.
Motorsport in the UK runs thanks to the efforts of volunteers who operate as part-time professionals. Before the start of the season Rescue Crews and Marshals will have been undergoing training to ensure they are fully prepared for anything that may happen at our opening meeting. Amongst other volunteers the hill controllers, paddock marshals and paddock office team are all itching to be back at Shelsley Walsh for the start of another exciting season at the oldest venue in motor sport that still runs as it has since 1905 over that challenging race track deep in rural Worcestershire.
We are also pleased to welcome on board new sponsors for 2011 in the form of Footman James Insurance and Brightwells Auctioneers of Leominster. They join long-term Shelsley Walsh sponsors Stratstone who proudly support us for yet another year.
Meeting content:The season opener marks the first visit of the season by the Midland Hill Climb Championship supported by the ever popular Paul Matty Sports Cars Lotus Championship and Hillclimb & Sprint Association Championship. Also invited for the first time are the Nottingham Sports Car Club Championship and an expanded class of side valve engines cars. Last May when this diverse group, then restricted to V8 side valve cars first visited us, huge variety and enthusiasm was the order of the day. Now that the class is open to any side valve engined car over 2 litres, we may well see 4 cylinders, V8’s, Straight 8’s and even possibly a Lincoln V16 or two, a decent diversion to the ultra serious Championship chasing cars.
