Top ten and good pace for Atech CRS GP in Barcelona GP3

Zoel Amberg scored Atech CRS GP's best result of the GP3 season in Sunday's race in Barcelona following his strong weekend in Istanbul in the opening round. The team made significant progress this weekend with much improved pace for all three drivers.

Atech’s star drive of the weekend went to Zoel who excelled in Sunday's race two, making up six places in the opening lap. Once the race settled he suffered from being unable to overtake on the notoriously tough circuit despite having a much faster pace than the cars ahead. Having started in 16th, he crossed the line in 10th place.

Four cars stalled on the grid and Marlon, starting from the back of the grid was accelerating and driving towards the right of a stationary car when a driver swerved in front of him. Marlon then couldn’t see the stricken car and hit it just as he had changed up to fifth gear. The impact was so severe that the left hand side of the car was completely destroyed and the gearbox was broken in half. Marlon walked away shaken but uninjured.

After the restart following a three lap safety car period, Nick started making his way through the field, but as with race one, his tyres started to suffer and he struggled to maintain his pace. He crossed the line 18th having started the race 24th.

Team Principal David Hayle: “It’s difficult to see the positives when all three drivers have driven so well over the weekend and not got the results they deserved but our pace here has been fantastic. On a circuit where overtaking is more of a possibility we could easily have been in the top six, if not on the podium. Zoel showed again that he has the skills to make his way through the pack at the start. With some work on his qualifying he’s going to be at the front end very soon, and  Nick is starting to show consistency which is very important. Marlon has had one of the worst weekends possible for a driver but he should take comfort from showing that he’s a podium contender.”

The next rounds of the 2011 GP3 Series take place at the Spanish circuit of Valencia over the weekend of 24-26 June.
