BELLE Vue star Patrick Hougaard has required 28 stitches in a hand injury after a crash in Poland on Sunday.Hougaard was leading the race but was struck by another rider and landed on his shoulder. That was not damaged, but the damage was caused when his hand was caught in a wheel. The Dane has already been ruled out of Belle Vue’s trip to Wolverhampton on Monday, but hopes to return to action within the next fortnight.Aces chief Chris Morton said: “Patrick has been told by the Polish doctor that he will be unable to ride for ten days but he is returning straight home to Denmark for further treatment.”

NEWCASTLE boss George English said a lack of match sharpness was an important factor in the Diamonds’ home defeat by Redcar on Sunday. The Bears triumphed 47-42 with Czech Grand Prix wild card Matej Kus winning four of his five rides and being well backed by Jason Lyons and Aaron Summers.English said: “For two of our lads it was always going to be a tricky affair to come back from injury, although Mark Lemon was showing signs of his best again late on especially after he replaced his ignition before his last ride which he won in good old fashioned style.“We have to remember Jason King is some eight weeks behind the rest of the league and is still very rusty not having ridden since last season, but he was riding steadily and looked comfortable despite his nasty knee injury.”

MILDENHALL romped to their biggest win of the season with reserve Joe Jacobs scoring a paid maximum in their 61-33 success over the Isle of Wight.Jacobs was unbeaten from five rides with James Brundle scoring a four-ride maximum, but the result was marred by a serious Heat 2 crash which saw Islanders’ reserve John Resch suffer a double broken leg and back injuries.Fen Tigers boss Robert Henry said: “It was an awful looking incident and I would like John to know he and his family are in our thoughts here at Mildenhall, and we wish him a speedy recovery.“It was great to see Joe show us what we all know he is capable of, and Lewis (Blackbird) was brilliant as well, showing he is unfazed by moving into the main team. We just need to keep the momentum going now."

PAST and present King’s Lynn riders will honour the memory of their ex-team mate Ashley Jones in Wednesday’s memorial meeting at the Norfolk Arena.Long standing club stalwarts Tomas Topinka and Kevin Doolan will both be racing along with current squad members Sam Masters, Lee Complin, Filip Sitera and former Stars riders Kozza Smith, John Oliver and Simon Lambert, as well as Jones’s younger brother Mark.Promoter Buster Chapman said: “Ashley will always be one of my favourite riders, he had so much grit and determination and I will never forget him. This is our sixth memorial meeting that we have staged, so far each one has always been a fitting tribute and I hope this one will be no different. “In my opinion it is extremely difficult to pick a winner as the line up has a good mix of established riders as well as ones who have the potential to become world class.”
